Got a Tezro

RE: Got a Tezro
Indeed sir.. a big welcome to the Tezro club..

Get a serial cable connected to the console port and fire the beast up remotely.. save wear on the power switch and you can do it whilst at work if you have remote access to something.

RE: Got a Tezro
Thanks for the good words everyone! it's all cleaned up and running well, now I'm just waiting for replacement hard drives and DVD drives so I can get IRIX installed on it.

One slightly bothersome issue is that I can't just replace the one 80 millimeter fan which has failed in the back fan block, unfortunately I seem to have to replace the entire block. Anyone know where to get that particular item?

PS: I just noticed how much the Tezro in my avatar icon seems to resemble the Companion Cube from Portal Wink

RE: Got a Tezro
Nice scope! Is that a 6 or 8 inch SCT? I used to have a 6" SCT but traded it in for a smaller 4" Televue NP-101. I'm actually in the middle of grinding out my own 8" primary for a DIY project (been in the middle of it now for a few years...), but I will finish it soon! Lack of free time and my workspace in the basement has become more of storage space now...

Also congrats on the Tezro, is that a V12?

edit: about the fan block, I've seen them pop up on ebay from time to time, but best bet is to contact mopar5150 and see if he might have a spare one. I've bought many items from him and he is a solid dude.

Any particular reason you can't just replace the one fan?

Thanks! It's a Meade 8" LXD55 Schmidt-Newtonian, which I recently got an updated tripod for. The scope itself is about 15 years old but it's still a champ, I use it mostly for (very) amateur astrophotography, nothing fancy, just puttering around the universe. 🌌

Grinding your own 8"? Truly you are of the hardcore, sir.👍

Yes, I got quite lucky on the Tezro considering it was a blind buy. They just had one photo of the front skin and nothing of the inside, and the guy had already palleted it up so I couldn't get any more details and had to hope for the best. It has four 700mhz R16000 processors, 4 gigabytes of RAM (which I'm about to upgrade to 8), and the V12 pro graphics set.

Believe me, I would love to be able to replace just the one 80 mm fan, but as you can see from the photos the wiring runs through the main cage to get to the fan and the cage is rivet sealed, no screwdrivers allowed here. I'd certainly be open to alternatives though if you know of a way to do it.

RE: Got a Tezro
my goal was to grind out dual 16" primaries to make a bino-telescope and I wanted to start with an 8" primary first just to see the process, but lack of time and space sort of forced me to put the project on the backburner. I also have too many projects, or so my wife tells me.

I wonder if you really need that fan - Is it the middle fan? I don't recall the 700's really getting all that hot. I would probably try to run it and keep an eye on the environmental, if everything stays within normal bounds you might be able to get away with one less fan. The v12 gets pretty hot tho. Worst case maybe taking a dremel to the rivets might be a option?

RE: Got a Tezro
Those black plastic things don't look like rivets. You might be able to put a blade underneath and wiggle them out (be careful not to slice them in  half) or push them back somewhat from the other side with a small 'stick' thingie (screwdriver etc) and use your nails.

Yes, you will have to undo the cable loom on the other side

This is just from looking at the photos, my Tezro still has it's original fans.

RE: Got a Tezro
oh another thing that came to mind - I've "fixed" fans in the past by slightly peeling back the sticker that hides the bearings and putting one to two drops of super lube (https://www.amazon.com/Super-Lube-51010-...07GSHC1D3/) into the guts/bearings of the fan. I've successfully rescued about 2 laptops with "failed" cpu fans and my PC's main chassis fan doing this.

obviously the sticker is on the wrong side of the cage in the pics, but that's something that's worked for me in the past with great success. If you do manage to get a fan free that might be something worth trying, or if you want to make a little slice in the sticker through the cage I guess what's there to loose...
