Hey sum][one, i remember you!

Welcome to our forum. These days i'm not very active due to parenting/work/renovation amid all that Human Malware thingy, but you can always drop me and others a line to have a chat.

RE: Nekochan users around?
Hi to all the ex-Nekochaers,

back in the day my focus (as jwhat), was Octanes.

I have had my Octane since at least, 2003 as this is the oldest file in my home directory (I have had the same "disk" since I first got the machine):

>> -rw-r--r-- 1 XXX user 640 May 11 2003 .profile

The oldest hinv file on that machine is this, which I likely posted on nekochan way back then:

>> -rw-r--r-- 1 XXX user 1505 Aug 21 2003 hinv.txt

>> % cat hinv.txt

>> PM10400MHZ Board: barcode KWA650 part 030-1605-002 rev A

This machine has XBOW 1.4 and I know I started with XBOX 1.3 , so it is likely that my early postings on Nekochan where about swapping from XBOW 1.3 -> 1.4.
I still have some parts of this original machine (the HD & LED lightbar ;-) ).
It mutated over the years into a very nice dual 600 / V12 Octane2.

Final trip down memory lane... I found this posting text (from the hinv forum, April 2004):

Also credit to Irinikus who I meet it later days of Nekochan and convinced me, with his usual SGI / IRIX enthusiasm, that I should join Irix Network as part of trying to keep SGI collector community alive and thriving.

Cheers from Oz,

jwhat/John.

RE: Nekochan users around?
I was a Nekochan user from 2010 onwards.  After it shutdown I (eventually) joined this forum because I recognized a number of former Nekochan user names here.  More former Nekochanners have joined since then, too, under recognizable user names.  Plus there are a few people here that  I've come to realize are ones I used to know with different names there.  There's a good-sized crowd that made the transition to here.

RE: Nekochan users around?
About 70% of the 2015-2016 regulars made it over. Of those that didn't, the most notable were Foetz, who doesn't like me and thus doesn't wanna be here, and ClassicHasClass, whom I'm guessing is burnt out over SGI stuff and Nekochan going down gave him an excuse. He also in general seems burnt out on retrocomp.

RE: Nekochan users around?
i've talked to Kaiser in person about his SGIs, and he considers them just toys, and probably doesn't want to use them much anymore. He offloaded a bunch of retrotech recently , and I got a iMac G3 Snow out of it.

I suppose that's a clear situation as well. ClassicHasClass/Kaiser was a great dude, and I wish he would have made the transition but I understand.

RE: Nekochan users around?
Hallo, I'm ex-Nekochan as well. Got into SGI machines in the early 2000s, had an "off-period" for quite some time, then re-discovered the itch after a house move (and after finding my old O2 and my Indys in the loft). That would have been 2013 and I found Nekochan around this time. Not overly active these days if I'm honest. Of course, the flaky PSU in my Indigo2 is part of the reason behind this and it's been a while since it was last powered on as a result.

These days I tend to lurk more than I post if I'm honest!

RE: Nekochan users around?
Ahh damn even more nostalgic feelings surfacing by reading all the above.
This afternoon I have a bunch of friends popping over literally just to enjoy a few beers and these machines. Having had them stored in a garage about a thousand miles far away has been quite crap, but equally amazing was the feeling to open that same garage last weekend, go through it and then, many driving hours later, taking them upstairs in my new home.

Turned on my Octane2, which was my main workstation back then, and came up without a glitch (well, except the moaning about the several missing mount points, of course).

My plan is to try and bring them all back to life, fix what/if needs to be fixed, and possibly sell/donate many of them, so if anyone here is from the UK maybe keep in touch, as I'm not planning on shipping overseas (thanks, f*king Brexit).

Until then, was nice to read from some familiar people and speak soon!
