Latest purchase?
RE: Latest purchase?
Nice! Yes, 1.5gb was a very substantial amount for a desktop in the late 90s.

RE: Latest purchase?
Latest purchase is a Phobos G160 network card for my Indigo2. Been after one for ages, but they're damn hard to find these days and I wasn't prepared to pay silly money. However, ajw99uk from here has been selling bits and pieces off, so I picked the card up from him on eBay for around £60.

Installed it today and it works, sort of. Not quite as quick as I was hoping. Tests I've done show I'm getting around 4MB throughput - I was expecting a bit more, I'll have to have a play with it. It is set to 100Mb / Full Duplex, so I'll have to investigate why the performance only seems modest. Still, there we go!

There's something wrong there, I've got one in my R10K Indigo2 and it gets line speed (100Mbit) without any significant CPU load. So do the GIO64 FDDI boards. The slow one is the EISA based phobos/3com board. And it pegs the CPU as well.

RE: Latest purchase?
Yeah, I was a bit surprised as well. I do see significantly less CPU usage than I did with my 3Com card, but performance has not been overwhelming so far. Not quite sure why at this point, it is running through a decent gigabit switch, so a strange one. I'll try a different cable and a few bits first (when I next get some free time!)

Of course, if anyone has any other suggestions of things to try, this would be useful!

Just got Axil's version of the Sun Type 5c. Perfect for matching my Axil 311. (Not sure what's with the weird bend in the image, the keyboard isn't warped in real life!)

Congrats on the keyboard. It looks very clean! I always appreciate having a matching keyboard for any of my machines. You must have been very happy to get the Axil keyboard to match your Axil computer.

It is in quite good shape. I bought it mainly because I can't imagine they're very common, and it's always nice to have matching hardware. Now I just have to keep my eyes open for a matching Axil mouse.

RE: Latest purchase?
The Raptor Computing Systems Blackbird mainboard with the IBM POWER9 CPU. https://www.raptorcs.com/content/BK1B01/intro.html

As there is no new MIPS-based desktop system I have got this one as the closest replacement for my poor old O2 (I still have been using my R10k/250 O2 as my main home desktop).

It's still not working, though. I ordered incompatible RAM so now I'm waiting for a new one.

I am no longer posting from the moose, SGI O2 with R10k/250, 1GB RAM,  IRIX 6.5.27, unfortunately.

RE: Latest purchase?
Picked up an O2 and 1600SW last saturday afternoon after being listed on Marktplaats. Was listed as not-functioning and the exterior was partly broken, but specwise it was too hard to resist: R12k@400MHz, 1 GB ram, AV unit plus some bits and bobs.

During all the solid red lights when testing that evening i only got it to green + chime once, so i knew it was possible to get it into a working state.
After glueing the black base, straightening the warped mainboard-carrier and removing most of the memory from higher populated banks, for about half a day i went into various states of solid red, no boot at all, and orange/green back into no boot at all. The power-on jumper trick i used successfully on a few occasions, but after putting the jumper back it snuck into its coma again.

(BTW, Power-on jumper procedure on a R12K O2 chassis sucks, because you have to take out the complete riser every single time, which includes removing the back bezel as well)

So my last resort was to replace the Dallas 1687 RTC chip and after one more power-on jumper procedure i got this:

Obviously this needs more work but it looks like the starting/shutdown sequence is now stable and reproducible and IRIX installs and runs. IDE is next and then it's adding memory back again and reconstructing the rest of the case.
