Latest purchase?
RE: Latest purchase?
I am indeed! I had a feeling the other bidder was you. I bid on the first one as well, but you pipped me to that one. I always wanted a High or MaxIMPACT board-set for my I2, but could never justify most current market rates for one given that it's just a hobbyist system. Anyway, the board-set works and it's been rather fun to play a bit of Quake (in hardware mode) and run some textured demos and whatnot on it.

Really jealous of that Onyx! Wish they were easier to find (and that I actually had room for one, lol).

Here's what I just got, though it's much less exciting:

A Sun ZX (Leo) graphics card. I got a pretty good deal on it, on account of it being "untested". Still, I suspect it's probably fine. If it does end up working, it would be a good addition to my Axil Sparcstation 10 clone, I figure. BTW, does anyone know what that little knock-out tab on the right hand side of the photo is?

Cool, have one of those in my SS10 (used to have it in my SS20 but it ran so hot the system would crash). I don't recall what the tab is for. The main issue with these is the complete lack of any usable software. There are a couple of fun PowerFlip-style demos but no readily-available OpenGL drivers or commercial applications that can use it. Shame because I always wanted to pit it against an Indy XZ to compare benchmark scores, apparently the two were quite similar.

My Axil has one 40MHz SuperSPARC, do you think running a second CPU would make it run too hot with the ZX? Also, the ZX is double stacked, is it possible to run other sbus cards with a ZX installed, or is it too tall? My understanding is that it should be fine. And if you can, is it likely to "cook" other cards that are installed? It would be nice to run a fast ethernet card in the system as well, if possible.

I don't intend to run anything newer than Solaris 2.6 on this system (I don't have the adapter to run it in my Ultra 1), so the driver issues aren't a big deal. I mostly just wanted a card capable of 24-bit color, though my understanding is that the ZX is generally pretty slow in most use cases.

RE: Latest purchase?
"I won't buy another Audi or BMW!"

I'm sadly addicted to BMWs.  :s

But they have been good to me compartively to my hondas and toyotas. Sure the parts aren't as cheap but far more reliable cars. Even more so than the 5000s audi I had which was very very troubled.

I have had a BMW z3 that I put a downing atlanta supercharger in. So much fun. Had that over a decade.

I still have a 1991 e30 325ix and a 2003 325ci. aaaaand.... I had to drop $3k to replace the steptronic transmission last week. It finally gave out after 16 years. BUT. the new one is smooth. I am considering an old VW 1950s-1970s Beetle restoration project in a few years. I actually work on my own BMWs and do almost every fix except the transmission. Auto tranny are like mysterious black boxes to me.

I used to really like BMW, especially in the e36/Z3 days!

My first car was a German spec e36 M3, I really loved that car!(Selling it was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made!)

I’ve also had an e46 320d, which also served me well.

And my current two cars are an Audi TT 2.0L TFSI Quattro and a BMW Z3. I love both of these cars and plan on keeping them.

When I say that I won’t buy another BMW or Audi, this is because I really don’t like their latest offerings and as far as I’m concerned, their reduction in build quality!

My next car will be a Jaguar, if I have anything to do with it.

RE: Latest purchase?
Just picked up an old Apple Macintosh Powerbook G3  520 aka "Wallstreet/Blackbird" on eBay for super cheap, classic design from the dawn of the internet.

I had one of these in the mid-90s and it was the pinnacle of design at the time, but of course this was shortly before I got thoroughly disgusted with all Mac stuff and decided to dive into Windows instead of switching to Mac OS X. I always missed this one particular item though, really liked the lines. .
