Setting up My Onyx2

Setting up My Onyx2
I'm currently on vacation in Cape Town (Home) and thus, for the first time in three years, have the opportunity to properly set my Onyx2 up.

I'm going to be installing a bigger drive, thus requiring a complete IRIX reinstall, and possibly adding some extra RAM. I also intend installing most of the software that I have on my Tezro onto this machine.

So allot of work lays ahead over the next few days!

I'm happy to report that the Onyx2 and O2 fired up perfectly first time!

I do however have a casualty! My PC!!! The 1100W PSU has failed! (This is my first ever PSU failure!!!, and it will be an expensive problem to solve, especially for an obsolete PC!!!)

So I've just packed the PC up for now!

I'll post the progress I make with the Onyx2 over the next few days!

DAMN IT RUNS HOT!!!!!! (It really is a space heater, and it's summer over here!!!)

RE: Setting up My Onyx2
I seem to have hit a snag with my Onyx2.

The graphics wouldn't come up, so I used my 486 to go in via serial, and this is what I found:

The EEPROM for the graphics pipe is faulty!!!!
Is there any way to try and fix this problem, by re-flashing the KONA EEPROM?

It seems like I have a bit of a problem, as I can't re-flash the EEPROM!!!

RE: Setting up My Onyx2
I've just pulled the GE16/4 module and I think I've found the EEPROM chip:

Here's its description:

Maybe I can replace it???

They are available on eBay:

I just need to verify that this is indeed the EEPROM chip on the GE16/4???

RE: Setting up My Onyx2
Can someone maybe send me a copy of the “tport.bin” file found in the following directory “/use/gfx/ucode/KONA/“ Preferably from IRIX 6.5.22, but from any version newer than 6.5.30.

As at this point, I have no way of telling if it’s not an issue with the file found in 6.5.30, which I currently have installed!

The machine was working perfectly! I’d just installed the Onyx Demos, which I had got up and running, shut the machine and went out with a friend. When I rebooted the machine I got no graphics!

RE: Setting up My Onyx2
While you seem to have things in order I guess I'd have to ask...the suddenness of the failure leads my mind to a possible power issue, not IC.

I mean, you cannot read it (all 0xFF) and you cannot flash it in place...but it was working just a few hours before. Wouldn't it do these things if it were being fed improper power or being shorted in some way? Before you go into this pulling and replacing...can you do a basic multimeter diode check on the VCC and other legs of the chip to see if you have a short with the board out. After that, if you can solder a wire to test point on the chip for VCC, plug it BACK into the system, and power it up and then take a voltage reading using the wire, then you would know you have good power to that chip.

It's just really really odd that you suddenly cannot do anything to the chip...a small passive (Cap, resistor, etc) dragging down the "local" 3V rail near the chip makes more sense to me than a chip suddenly not working at all with no warnings.

Let us know what you find, good luck.

RE: Setting up My Onyx2
I had something similar happen to a GE16. I had another dead one so one of my colleagues stole the flash from that one and transplanted it to the first one. It's still sitting, waiting to test it.

I can confirm that IRIX 6.5.30 works and installs fine on an Onyx2. There's nothing wrong with the data on the CDs. I'm saying that because it's not always the case ... for example, a Crimson RE needs a patch to a clean IRIX 6.2 installation before the graphics will shut down correctly.

I assume you have discovered the ireeprom command and tried to force flash it?

Thanks very much for the good info as always! Smile

I did find the command to force the flash, and it still failed! :(

"./ireeprom -w -f /usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/tport.bin -F"
