This all looks fine..

You know, if you've already swapped out the IO9 and you're getting the same results, it's more than likely not with the IO9 that the problem lies.

RE: tezro problems
Is there a way to flash the prom with newer version, but without IRIX installed - from install media for example ?
Or does someone can recommend me a compatible SCSI adapter so I can do it from my IRIX install ?

Answer...NO PROM from Irix Only...maybe from Inst Miniroot...but I'd not chance it.

Okay...I've just re-read your entire thread...you still don't have a valid L1 dallas chip, the one you bought on eBay is wrong...period.

Everything you've done is still using the wrong chip, which means that it has the wrong memory layout, which means all of this is very likely because you CANNOT store valid BASEIO inventory settings at all.  You never obtained a working chip, you shoved "something" in the L1 dallas slot that claims DS1220 Compatibility.  But no one has ever proved that a simple DS1220 RTC can function in these machines correctly.

Looks like glitchwrks has released a replacement 3.3v RTC for Tezro now (perhaps not perfect, but functional): https://www.tindie.com/products/glitchwr...placement/

Your Ethernet BASEIO complaint and SCSI BASEIO complaint are part of a default inventory that is initialized into L1 NVRAM, I don't think you have a valid hardware inventory because your RTC chip memory layout isn't exactly like the required Tezro L1 RTC.  For the record, I've never heard of anybody successfully using a normal DS1220 (OEM or compatible chip) in any SGI and actually work.

Go get a known-working L1 RTC, then re-init everything...then we'll circle back here.

RE: tezro problems
Actually I've replaced it with DS1742W.

However it may be fake part....

Anyway, I purchased glitchwrks

RE: tezro problems
Hi kokoboi,

there are two very simple tests that you can do to determine if you have a RTC / Battery Issues:

1. For L1 - which uses the DALLAS DS1742W or any compatible replacement (glitchworks or cz7asm), for RTC/NVRAM storage, set the date via L1 and see if this sticks after pullingl out power, if not then your DALLAS battery is gone.

2. For IRIX - which uses the RTC chip that sits underneath the STI SNAPHAT Battery / Oscillator package, set the date (via IRIX or PROM) on this and again see if this sticks after pulling out power, again it it does not then you have SNAPHAT battery problem and this should be replaced (I know you cannot get to this point yet as you can't get to prom yet)

Like Weblacky, I am kind of inclined to go through set of basis diagnostics to help try and isolate the problem/s and making sure that each of these is systematically closed off.

As per the DALLAS DS1742W thread that Weblacky provided links to, if you get a glitchworks or cz7asm DALLAS repalcement, you should just be able to remove the battery to clear it.

I have successfully put in new/cleared cs7asm DS1742W replacements into both O350 (equivalent to Tezro) and NUMALink router and they auto-initialized without a hitch, I would expect that the glitchworks ones would be the same.

Cheers from Oz,

jwhat/John.

RE: tezro problems
Thanks Jwhat,
I feel this is something incredibly fundamental. I’ve never seen a failure like this and I don’t think anyone else has either. I think, just like anything else, covering your fundamentals is probably going to solve the situation.

Of course there are new occurrences of issues, based on the history of each system, but I feel like if that’s the case we still need to be using correct parts (or as close as we can get to them today) for at least proper troubleshooting.

Just like an automobile, you don’t want to end up learning that the sensor you bought from a third party never worked right to begin with and that was the cause of all your issues versus having just bought the OEM part. Now in this case you have no real choice but to purchase third-party but we’re trying to steer you to third-party solutions that should conform well enough to the original to be called a functional replacement.

Once that’s addressed we can then move on.

Kokoboi,
Seeing is how you’ve tried two different I09 cards and have exactly the same symptoms I would agree that it has to be the mainboard. Well the L1 is responsible for setting all the hardware states and values and then bootstrapping the PROM.

Various users, including Jwhat, have proven that you need a fully compatible working and clean L1 RTC to work. You definitely can’t work without the RTC and you definitely can’t work with a corrupted RTC that the system doesn’t detect as wrong and is able to clear/initialize itself.

You can fully get by with a dead clock on both the RTC‘s due to dead batteries. Everything else is not negotiable.

However for both Tezro and Fuel it’s been shown that if you did have dead batteries but working RTC‘s, you normally need a double reboot on power on to have them properly initialize and then reboot and go through default initialization. That is to say that normally the first stage is the self programming by the station if they’re blank than normally they assume you have working batteries they tell you to reboot deep in the logs. If you don’t have a working battery you can keep power on by just using the soft reset on the front of a lot of the systems or issuing a reset through the L1 terminal. Then the system board is still providing power to the RTC so it still has the memory initialized in the previous boot and will start correctly. It’s only when external powers cut off that the RTC memory fades and eventually erases.

Knowing this if you had two working RTC‘s with dead batteries you should’ve been able to successfully boot using a series of soft reboots one after the other until successful start of the operating system. Since that hasn’t happened yet I’m still going to assume we have a basic RTC problem at the L1.

RE: tezro problems
As I previously explained with the last Dallas (from the photo) I was able to setup the serial number and the machine holds it just fine.
However if the dallas chip is fake (which is mostly likely) it probably doesn't function like it should be. The glitchwrks has been purchased, but I'm not so optimistic. The machine worked few years ago and even with dead nvram it should boot.
I can not run any diagnostics as I can't boot IRIX at the moment.

you can run diagnostics off of the cdrom.

also, you will experience a world of L1 pain if the dallas is really wrong.. like the tezro won't boot into L1 at all kind of pain or will give you crazy messages over the console..
