Actually, I think we agree on this. We just come to the same result from different ends.

I start at 23 and add on, you start at 30 and take out.

But neither one of us wants to run an out-of-the-box 30   Cool

Wow,
This is the very first I've even heard of this issue! How do you partially upgrade? I mean if you start @23 and add newer stuff...how? Which packages? I thought all the interdependencies forced you to take nearly everything anyway.

Can you shine some more light on this, perhaps explain the process more? I get the reasoning just fine, it's the HOW that I don't get.

You probably have to be a user to care ... if you just like the boxes to collect and look at demos, none of this stuff will bother you. But I did all of our work stuff on mine, and found the earlier incarnation of many of the tools much better.

I just used software manager, put checks on the items I wanted and used "set rulesoverride on" a lot.  In some cases took a few tries to get what I wanted.

It'd be nice to have a setup all ready to go that didn't need so much mollycoddling ... it's on the to-do list. Some day Tongue

I'm surprised there isn't a ~32GB (or smaller) IRIX disk dump that's a set-up 6.5.30 with the application CDs and such already installed. Seems like there'd be value in that to newcomers

What are you going to use to dump that to a disk? Most SGI use SCSI 3 and up, and that's so rare on consumer hardware you can't get USB adapters for it or even PCIE and Windows doesn't even package SCSI drivers anymore?

For me I guess it's a question of practicality. I have no other SCSI machines to copy shit to or from other than IRIX, and disk dumps are notoriously tough to deal with.

RE: IRIX 6.5.30 Overlays Install
The only modern solution would be UDF (if you use a new enough Irix version) on an form of optical media (holding large image files). That storage path is still available on new systems. However that likely won't encompass blu-ray media unless you can find a rare IDE blu-ray drive (sony made one) and try to use an optical-only ATAPI/IDE to SCSI bridge from eBay and use rewritable Blu-Ray media.

Best you could find would likely be DVD-RAM Double Sided supported SCSI DVD drives, if you use the media outside the cartridges you can use most modern DVD and blu-ray drives to read/write it on MacOS and Windows (assuming you CONTROL what UDF version you format with to ensure Irix can read it). I have these and do this from time to time (matching UDF versions is a pain).

Of course this likely wouldn't work for bootable images, but as dumps...maybe it has enough space if you used some from of support splitting that prompts to be continued. Whatever is available.
