IRIX 6.5.30 Overlays Install -
MikeK - 03-23-2019
I have a clean install of 6.5 on my O2 and am trying to install the 6.5.30 Overlays set. I get a conflict that I need to install "eoe.sw.base (IRIX Base Execution Environment) from an additional distribution. Where do I find this and how do I install it? Any help would be great, thanks.

My installation method for the sake of simplicity (and for my mental health too) is to copy all CDs to a local disk (about 5GB) and open all distributions at once from inst.
Let it figure out all dependencies for you automatically, not the other way around (<-- thats the mental health part).
BTW, this also works when trying to install compiler front ends (C, C++, ...).

This is generally a pain, and what I've done, is to install the minimum version of 6.5 that supports the hardware, then use the software manager once IRIX is installed to do the upgrade and deal with the conflicts.

If it comes to it, you might just reinstall using Irinikus's video tutorial here:

The reason why you get this message is probably that the Foundation CDs are missing. You need:
Foundation 1
Foundation 2
Dev Foundation
Dev Libraries
Applications
Overlays 1
Overlays 2
Overlays 3
You should be fine if you follow the guide of Irinikus linked above

MikeK, are you just running the plain version of 6.5 atm? What does "uname -R" say? If you're just running the original 6.5, then before you can upgrade to 6.5.30 you must install Patch 5086 from /CDROM/installtools on the 6.5.30 inst tools CD. Once done, exit swmgr, then run it up again (or to be commpletely safe, reboot), then you can begin the main 6.5.30. Note that going straight from 6.5 to 6.5.30 will skip a number of useful items due to default selections, so for a better install, after the initial update using these commands (or use the GUI menu options):
Code:
keep *
install update
bring up the system again, run up swmgr, read in all the CDs (original June 1998 6.5 4-CD set plus all the 6.5.30 discs) and then you can install things like Impressario and the printer services without swmgr moaning about conflicts or missing items, and also install a butt load of items which are likely missing anyway, such as all the Digital Media Tools subsystems, etc. PM me and I can send you a product selections files list file.
Ian.

Thanks for the help Ian, I'm not able to find the 5086 patch on any of my CDs. Does anyone know where the patch is for sure and how I install it? I've looked in every directory I can find.
Thanks, Mike

It sounds like you do not have a genuine 6.5.30 inst tools CD because installtools should definitely be there, I just checked. PM sent.
In the meantime, you can download patch 5086 from my site here:
http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/depot/patchSG0005086.tar.gz
Note that the contents of a genuine 6.5.30 boot CD under /CDROM should look like this (listed with /bin/ls -F):
Code:
CDgrelnotes* dist/ relnotes/ WhatsNew/
CDrelnotes* installtools/ stand/

Does anyone have tarball versions of the 6.5.30 disks, trying to do a fresh install and can't deal with the ISO files from internet archive since I am on a Mac and have had zero luck with converting the .iso images to be able to burn....
Need Overlays 2 & 3 and Installation Tools and Overlays 1 in some kind of format that I can burn to a CD.
