IRIX 6.5.30 Overlays Install

RE: IRIX 6.5.30 Overlays Install
It's all on usftp.irixnet.org

You CANNOT burn ISO9660 CDs from EFS images, they are not ISOs and your SGI will not be able to boot from them. EFS images must be written using a program like Padus or A120% and use "Disc At Once" settings.

Technical problems should be sent my way.

Fuel is 50-50. They say there's fixes that apply to the newer machines, but I only saw one or two tiny repairs to xfs and maybe usb/firewire that were worth having -- but a whole lot of crap and destruction past 23.  And at least one of the ones you want isn't even in 30. My new rule on anything is to go to 23, then on a 3-series, add the few actual fixes from 30.  Anything else, leave it alone at 23.

Repairing what a 30 overlay does to your computer is a bitch. Do you want real fonts or some home-made crapola ? A real printing system or some fossy shit that isn't even supported in foss anymore ? Display Postscript or a half-ass hack that sort of works, mostly ? It's a long list of stuff they totally screwed up at 24 ....

Well there is 6.5.27m on it now, just need to figure out how to make the damn disks, tried both Nero and Alcohol 120 and making nothing but coaster... Have tried just about every type of setting.. If someone can post the exact ones as it has been ages since I made some IRIX install CDs.

Umm, why not just copy the contents into a directory on the hard drive and use software manager (swmgr ?) to install ? That works fine and it's easier. You can just drag and drop the directory into the dropbox.

I'd use "advanced install" or whatever they call it and look through what it's doing tho, instead of blindly changing everything. Some stuff is pretty outdated, other stuff is a no-no, better to choose just the stuff you want.

Can the files be located on another disk other than root to do a fresh install?

You probably want to avoid using the the CD's anyways. There are several networked installers to choose from these days, way easier to use one of those instead of flipping CD's all day long. (But hey remember when we installed with 25 floppy disks ;p )

(The EFS overlay image burning, I think I wrote WIKI page on that it's probably still out there in some mirror)

Yes, that's a network install, if you're going to a bunch of boxes it's worthwhile. You have to deal with bootp and stuff tho. I think the process is documented on Ian's site ?

Or did you mean another disk in the same box ? Should be able to just tell inst to look in a different place. I haven't tried it tho, there may be pitfalls. Lots of that dksc(0,4,0) stuff ....

For a regular install, I just did the minimum minimum then added what I wanted later. Some of that junk you don't want at all anymore - things that quit working twenty years ago, for example - so I found that cleaner.

But installing isn't really that big a deal. You do it once and you're set for the next ten years, I am puzzled by why that seems to be such a fixation.
