Before: not to bad right not perfect but pretty good.

After: WHOA 😳 I think ups actually threw this because the 8th inch metal case is severely damaged racked and on one corner completely folded over.

It must have hit on one corner and rolled several times even the internal hard drive caddy is smashed!!

Surprisingly still runs tho and works:p

It’s a hurtin lil toaster

That is really sad.

On the other hand, to toss a computer into a box with a handful of these silly inflatable air pillow thingies is insane. Especially an O2. The poor thing never had a chance.

HERE you can see how you should package an SGI.

To be fair that is with most of the packaging removed out of the box.

In just blown away that the metal was folded over. Like that takes a serious blow

Very sad!!!

SGI really made use of some of the worst plastics in the business!

I ended up by ordering a perfect set of skins from Ian Mapleson for mine, after three unsuccessful attempts at acquiring one!!!!

The big problem here is that the metal structure is able to shift around within the plastics, and if it gains any kind of momentum it's all over!

If the box is dropped an inch, the plastics will brake!

Guys, it's not actually that the plastics are "bad". All plastics of this vintage are vulnerable to UV and heat degradation, which makes them more brittle. Darker colors absorb more energy, hence more fragility.

As for that, yeah I don't usually use UPS for that reason. They're terrible. FedEx is annoying too

Agreed, it's really the packaging. Anything with weight (that can move) will pop those inflated cushions, then allow more movement, which means more popping. You have to use foam, period. Anything else will either compress or pop (allowing movement).

You know, I don't have the contacts but if anyone had the contacts to make "new" foam pieces from shipping SGIs, it would be good cottage industry. Hell, even a 3D printed matrix with space to attach like weather stripping or whatever to encase an SGI would do great as well.

It really comes down to people are no longer used to shipping heavy items to each other (businesses are of course) but not your average person. Consumer items are mostly small and light these days. Even when they realize an item is heavy...they still never put two and two together. When the item is like over 25 pounds, things change, when you crest 40 pounds or more...then it's a whole new ball park inside a common cardboard box.

I seriously think the FIRST tutorials we make should be shipping tutorials. Like, go to grainger or walmart or (approved known place), Buy this exact model of SealedAir RT Quick packing foam. Buy one of "these known boxes" for this exact system model, pack like this as shown in 4 steps, seal box and enjoy!

Yes it won't be cheap, but prices should reflect that anyway.

I've got loads of vintage items with plastics in my collection and the O2 is without a doubt more fragile than the other items are!

SGI plastics also give off a rather unique sweet smell when they break! (A familiar smell to most of us though!)

Wait until you meet the Origin 200. 30kg of rack-mountable steel sitting on 4 adjustable feet made from O2 quality plastic. And don't get me started on the hinges of the front panel.
