RE: Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes
For completeness, could you please post your printenv?  That never got done, I almost thought I found something...then realized that wasn't your printenv on the posting :-(

Your OSLoadFilename must be "OSLoadFilename=/unix"
Your OSLoader, should be " OSLoader=sash"

These are the big differences between your printenv and mine!

Here's my printenv again for reference:

Thanks Irinikus for reviewing it. Those changes are just because of OpenBSD , they would normally be as you stated.

The problem is that if you don't manually change them, they will more than likely be as they are when the system tries to load the miniroot for the IRIX install.

Try using the "setenv" command to update them before your next install attempt!

RE: Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes
So.... today I replaced the Dallas 1286 chip and something different happened. I was able to install Irix , albeit only if the Solid Impact graphics is disconnected and using the serial console. Now the machine boots to Irix , but all the output is going to the serial console. If I run hinv there is no graphics in it.  I assume there is no graphics drivers because when I installed it there was no graphics hardware connected. I have tried reinstalling with the Solid Impact connected but it's giving me the old issue again (screen goes black and nothing happens, so I am assuming something is bad with the SI card). Is it possible for a card to display the PROM but not be able to work later on when it needs to display graphics? Is there a way to force the SI graphics drivers from Irix cds? I have tried doing 'setenv console g' but it didnt' change anything

RE: Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes
This is a level of fiddling I’ve never done.

But given time and the amount of testing that still needs to be done. I’d recommend a troubleshooting flow of least money:

Very cheap solid impact cards do show up on eBay regularly (like $50-$70). I’d wait and buy one and try it (yes there is a chance the replacement card itself could be bad, but I don’t see another option).

If that card gives you same issues, then I’d assume you have a PSU problem that causing instability when a heavier draw is demanded.

I’d get a PSU that would support dual solids impact graphics. Get it working, then install both solid impacts for bragging rights and be done at the end.

I know, I know, the PSU situation isn’t great right now, but in another year or two, hopefully that will change (assuming enough rebuildable inventory exists).

I'm gonna try with replacing the SI first. Hopefully it's not the Power Supply. Do you think it's possible to try and run this machine with a XZ card (from a Teal Indigo2) for testing?

That’s actually a great question. I honestly don’t know. I think only an old timer who’s done a lot of parts swapping can answer that.

Hopefully one of the more experience members knows that answer.
