Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes

RE: Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes
Ok so here's the details of my disk. I realized I had it double jumpered (there was a jumper in the SCA adapter and one on the drive). I have now removed the jumper on the drive and only left the one on the adapter. The prom sees the disk as disk 1 in both cases. I believe the ID0 thing (the jumper is called ID0 on the adapter but it's not target 0) is a terminology problem and a non issue and the OpenBSD message about 8 targets probably refers to the bus capability (up to 8 targets where the Initiator is 0 and the others are 1-7 but I am not a BSD expert and I may be wrong). I am going to try with just the jumper on the adapter and we'll see.

On your adapter, the ID0/ID1/ID2 jumpers only matter when using the SCA connector (which appears to be missing (not soldered) on your particular adapter), so they will have no effect at all. What will matter are the ID jumpers on your disk. On the last picture, your disk is configured with ID #1, which matches what you are seeing from hinv and OpenBSD.

I cannot see well enough, but see about putting polyimide tape or a piece of cardboard (like from a cereal box) between the PCB and the bare drive, it looks like all those solder joints are about to touch (or are touching the drive). You don't want that. It's a tight fit and board can bend under pressure when installed (did on two of my Indigo2 sleds). Just slip an isolator between the sharp solder points on the back and metal drive casing.

MIOD - The SCA connector is on the other side...it's not missing. You can zoom in and see the plastic SCA connector edge on the other side through the two mounting holes.

Fully agree. I had this problem with an SCA adaptor on my Indigo2. Seeing sparks flashing from the back of the drive as the pins from the molex connector shorted against the drive wasn't pleasant!

miod: It is an SCA drive - the SCA connector is on the other side of the board Smile

roach: I've pulled the system disk from my Indigo2 (I also use an SCA adaptor with a more modern drive). I'd advise removing the jumper from the "ID0" pins and instead attaching the 6-pin connector block from the drive sled to the ID pins. This will allow the drive sled to set the ID of the drive automatically and should avoid any issues. You can also try removing the jumper from the "TPR" pins. Those are the Termination Power pins. Worth trying without, as per weblacky's earlier post.

RE: Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes
TrippyNet, the default 6-pin ID block is sometimes pinned out backwards from the SCA Adapter board direction, if the adapter board uses a 2.54mm jumper spacing he can fit it on (the 6-pin is 2.54mm headers, not 2mm MICRO-JUMPER headers), but he may need to swap pins.  It depends on which side of the ID-pins on the adapter board is ground.

I don't recommend using the Sled ID connector until all settings are working, then he COULD integrate the 6-pin connector and connect directly to the adapter (with further instructions).

Please refer to my (much early) post: https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-1485-p...ml#pid9506

The 6-pin ID cable isn't long enough by itself to reach the Drive's native ID block (it's in the front of seagate SCA drives), SGI drives came with a flex cable that adapted 2.54mm 6-pin to 2mm 6-pin to mate the drive front or underside ID connectors (MICRO-JUMPERS).  That won't work here as he's likely missing that piece anyway.

The best solution (once working) is to use a multimeter to check if the RIGHT side of ALL ID jumpers on the adapter are shorted together, if they are then no pin-swap is needed on the 6-pin ID connector, just plug in the 6-pin with the "single cable" row facing outwards (right hand side), starting at ID0 jumper.

If the left-hand side of the ID pins on the adapter is shorted together, then ground is on the left and you'll need to gently press the locks on pins 1 & 3 of the "full row" of pins on the 6-pin block and swap 1 & 3, then you can plug it into a left-handed ID ground :-) with the "single row" on the left-hand side (ground).

Most SCA adapters use normal optical drive-style 2.54mm jumpers...I've one model of SCA adapter that uses the same MICRO-Jumper 2mm as a SCSI HDD jumper, then you'll need to adapt header styles, (see my posted link) which isn't fun!

I think as long as the drive ID bit 0 is shorted - SCSI ID 1 that you are good to try again, I'd also advise removing the TERMPWR jumper setting (you don't need to care AT ALL about TERMINATION, don't set a thing about it.

You also MAY need to FORCE the drive into SE mode using the front jumper.  You are using an Ultra160 drive and it's supposed to autodetect it, but if you're adapter is crap, it won't do it right.  When I setup a new Indigo2 disk I manually force Single-Ended (SE) mode!  To ensure no funny business (afterall, it's going to stay in the Indigo2, right?)

RE: Indigo2 Impact mysterious Irix install woes
Guys,I just want to let you know that I appreciate all the feedback and the tips and I want to thank each one of you!

Here's what I have tried now:

a) removed all jumpers from the SCA adapter (even the TPWR one)
b) applied a mini jumper in the bottom surface of the drive to force SE mode
c) only left the jumper in the front of the drive to have it show up as disk 1

I removed all the other drives and have an external cdrom attached to the machine
this is my hinv now

Yet it still has the same behavior. Copies stuff from install media then screen goes black

video is here https://streamable.com/46k9vm

EDIT: I am using Irix media from here IRIX 6.2 with Indigo2 IMPACT 10000 (Part 1 of 2)

Why don’t you just burn yourself a set a IRIX 6.5.22 discs, as they’re freely available?

I tried to use the booterizer with Irix 6.5.22 same effect.

Try using physical CD's in your systems CD-ROM drive!
