Which Apple computer do you use daily?

RE: Which Apple computer do you use daily?
I use a Power Mac G5 11,2 2.3 DC most often when I need to use a mac. I have 10.5.8 and Ubuntu Mate installed on it. I did attempt to install Gentoo on it, but it has been a long slow attempt, and until I get a better handle on Linux, I will put that project on hold.

Lucanis, I've built Gentoo on my Quicksilver G4/866 using a little help from cross compilation distcc worker threads running on my MacPro1,1 in VmWare Fusion/x86-64. Let me know if you need help.

RE: Which Apple computer do you use daily?
Not Apple hardware but I have a Dell Optiplex that I hackintoshed. Overall it's a pretty great machine and runs a lot cooler than a real Mac and cost almost nothing. The only downside is that if I ever want to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina I'll have to do a clean install and copy all my files manually and set everything up again. I tried to do an update straight from the App Store but Clover didn't want to fully boot the installer. I think I'll just wait for 10.16 next year.

Not long ago I started using a 2009 MacBook Pro 15 inch. I paid an eye watering $20 for it. I figured for the price of two trips to Taco Bell I can't do much better. It still gets around 4 hours on the original battery. I upgraded to an SSD and install OS X 10.9.5 which has very little software support these days but I can update some things through Homebrew, I have Chrome, VLC, Transmission, Sublime Text, and the built in mail client works fine. I chose Mavericks because I figured that if I can't use the latest OS X version I might as well use something that looks nice and offers some stability. It does what I require of a laptop. I was going to install Linux on this thing but the trackpad drivers aren't as good. The trackpad gestures on this thing under OS X are fantastic for moving through lots of open windows and workspaces.

RE: Which Apple computer do you use daily?
I've got a few:

iMac G4 is a perfect kitchen computer due to the design (fits under the cabinets).
Older Intel Mini as an NFS server to feed the SGIs.
Powerbook running 10.4 for the rare occasions I want to use applications from the pre-decent-OS Mac world.
Daily driver: 2012 Macbook hacked to run Big Sur.

Real work these days is on Linux, but I'm thinking of one of the M1 macbooks. I'm just not sold on the whole "deprecated OpenGL" thing. In some ways, a Windows 11 Pro machine is more a "Unix (Linux) workstation" than OS 11...

I got a new M1 just recently. I wasn't sold on the "Apple Silicon" thing. It's not that I don't like ARM, I just never wanted a big iPhone or something like that. Turns out, it's still pretty much the same MacOS as ever. The new M1s are really nice. Mine is 6 times faster than my old Macbook, runs much cooler and everything that worked my old Macbook still works. The bigger jump was to OS 11, because you lose the 32bit apps.

I believe Catalina dropped 32 bit apps. As far as using a Mac as a Unix workstation these days, they're pushing their proprietary Metal API to replace OpenGL on their systems and they'll eventually drop all OGL support.  I'm not rewriting old stuff written against OpenGL for Apple's walled-garden business plans, so I'm holding off buying a newer system from them.  Otherwise, the M1 Max Macbook looks nice.
