Help ID CPU Board from Indigo

Help ID CPU Board from Indigo
Hello - I just got an indigo from ebay, and it's my first - I used SGI many many years ago (work- it was a Onyx Infinite Reality, plus a host of O2s..) and wanted this just as a interesting system for (now) oddball CPU and Unix (mips and 5.3).

Just taking it apart for some cleaning as I'm waiting for a video adapter - i haven't booted it yet.

My questions is that the CPU board dosen't look like a R3000 board- the SIMMS look to be regular 72pin and the CPU is not soldered into the board. It was listed as a R3K. Hoping someone can tell me what board this is even before I boot and see what is on the HD....

OK - I don't seem to be able to attach images, so I'm posting them here: https://imgur.com/a/J1tWtEA

CPU board is down at the bottom.

I reckon it looks like an IP20 board with an R4K?

I have never owned an Indigo myself, but I found it odd that yours came with an FCC waiver sticker?

I seem to recall that early Commodore Vic 20 models were brought from Japan and sold in the US before FCC approval was granted. They were aware the boards were not properly shielded to comply with FCC restrictions, but still released them with a similar waiver.

Do post more pics when you get it working, always nice to see an Indigo being brought back to life!

Yes, i'm interested to see what gfx board this is. And now I can go up to Irix 6.5.

I thought the FCC sticker was strange also (so I took a picture). No history on this other than it came from California, so who knows what it was used for. Maybe it's an early 4k before that was ready to be sold.

RE: Help ID CPU Board from Indigo
Inferred from the heatsink it is an R4000 CPU on an Indigo HP2 board (R3K's are HP1)

The graphics looks to be either XS24 + ZBuffer or XZ24 or Elan. Can't tell because it depends on the amount of Geometry Engines (1 = XS, 2=XZ, 4=Elan). At least it has 24 bit color support because of the three framebuffer boards on the very left of photo 4.

And if it is functional, it's actually a very decent ebay find, congratz!

I've only ever seen that on prototype hardware

It looks like maybe 4 big chips- are they the GEs?

Also, i'm going to use your docker to install Irix once I get this on the network and booting.

It certainly looks like an early release by all accounts, probably a showcase unit or a working unit sent to developers. Nice find.

It definitely looks that way. Here is an auction with better pictures of the GEs from the front. Not my auction, not my monkeys Smile

There are four sockets for GE chips, but that doesn't mean they're always all populated. In case they aren't, a "jumper" is present.

You'll find out soon enough. Just install IRIX and run 'hinv'.
