Would be great for the whole community.
Well, it might be interesting to release a "Reanimator in LOVE" version Biggrin, replacing the Raspberry Pi OS services with LOVE and taking advantage of the downloadable IRIX images from the Reanimator server.
I'd find a combination of both in a special version of Reanimator also very useful, though I'm happy with my current setup (RasPi for RARP/Bootparams/DHCP/BOOTP, Odroid HC1 for (RARP)/TFTP/NFS, both on GNU/Linux) - at least until the next OS release.  Angry But for new users wanting to try network installations or diskless operation an all-in-one solution like LOVE or a ready-to-start solution like Reanimator would be really great, as new users "can't be bothered"  Rolleyes  with or are very reluctant setting up all those separate services. But I agree, it's a PITA.

A usecase interesting for me would be to serve the IDE(s) or other diagnostic tools (e.g. odydiags, field_diags, etc.) for SGI (and why not also for other machines) via network. Does someone know where to find the required files on which discs?

RE: LOVE (install IRIX from IRIX, LINUX or WINDOWS)
'Love' it! It reminds me of sitting in data centers all night watching netboot installs.... wait...

I don't love Ubuntu or Windows. I had trouble with Ubuntu not answering bootp requests, all the new networking overlays on the desktop versions are stupid. I checked all the obvious and didn't find anything but I stopped for times sake and I switched to Windows 10. The Win10 exe wanted some missing developer/debug dll's. I grabbed them, dropped them in the folder and it ran like a charm when installing on this pristine Indy R5000SC (hinv shows IP addr from AWS, 256mb ram, GR3/XZ board and a floptical!). Wonder what this one was doing at AWS. Anyway, had some errors from the Indy, which acted like SCSI issues, yanked the floptical, no issues at all.

@TruHobbyist Thanks for putting all this (love) together!

RE: LOVE (install IRIX from IRIX, LINUX or WINDOWS)
I remembered I struggled to install irix on my indigo2 by several complicated configurations through the network.
the stuffs which are related to the computer network were difficult for normal users like me.
it was a nightmare. but I made it at last by DINA at that time.
https://wiki.preterhuman.net/Using_DINA_...on_of_IRIX
it sounds like that LOVE is easier than DINA.

RE: LOVE (install IRIX from IRIX, LINUX or WINDOWS)
Hey guys,

What happened to this project, is it still running and available?

as I'm going through setting up some machines for the upcoming WoRC (https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-4364.html) I've just spent my last two weekends sweating and mostly swearing whilst trying to install/re-install IRIX on them .. with ZERO luck so far.
I'm using the same Linux laptop I've successfully installed a bootp server 2 years ago and managed to install Irix on every SGI, except that ain't working anymore. I'm suspecting that too many Debian updates occurred since then and now it just doesn't work.

So I tried all the alternatives around, including Vagrant, VM, Raspberry and was checking this project, but neither worked or is available anymore. It was one of the most disappointing weekend in a long while! Biggrin

Isues I'm having with the bootp setup is that I can see the file requests (and whether it fails or not) on the bootp logs, but then nothing happens on the IRIX side so I'm not sure what broke since my last successful experience.

I'm going to probably start a new thread but I wanted to check on this one first.

Cheers!

Going to give this a try tonight, btw.

@VisualCortexLab

The links on the first page of this thread to the necessary love guide and files may default to https links based on your browser prefs but the site only responds to http, so just strip the s:

http://contrib.irixnet.org/truhobbyist/love/1.0.0/
http://contrib.irixnet.org/truhobbyist/l..._guide.txt

The IRIX.tar file(s) link is still avail in this thread as well. I advise a win10 server side, super easy. pay attention to the LABELS.txt file paths and watch the logs, it will tell you what's wrong. I've successfully used this tool on my Indy R5K, an O2+ (R12K), Octane2 and even my Onyx2 (both R10K).

Hope this helps.

Thanks man, I'll check it out this week! Smile My Firefox is configured to use only https so I was getting a 404 on the first link! Thanks for the pointer!

RE: LOVE (install IRIX from IRIX, LINUX or WINDOWS)
I tried to run the LOVE installer in Windows 11, but keep getting errors that certain libraries are not installed. These are all debug libraries, so not installed by default on Windows systems. Installing Visual studio + SDK's has helped to solve 1 error, 2 remain. Before trying to find the missing DLL files, does the tool actually require the debug versions of the libraries or am I doing something wrong?
The Linux version seems to work just fine.

RE: LOVE (install IRIX from IRIX, LINUX or WINDOWS)
Hi,

I've been testing LOVE to do a fresh install on my Octane. I've set it up on a Debian 11 VM on my Proxmox server and at first everything works just fine; I can start the partitioner, then start the "Install System Software" with the IP address and "love.6530.1" just fine. It installs the miniroot and I get into the "Inst 4.1 Main Menu".

Following the instructions (http://contrib.irixnet.org/truhobbyist/l..._guide.txt) I am at step 7.0 and I try to "Open" enter the path for the overlay cd: "192.168.0.128:love.6530.1" (the installer suggests this, and it's correct) but it eventually times out (during this there are no new lines in the VM running the LOVE utility) and I get this on the Octane:

"ERROR: Can't set up network connection to host 192.168.0.128: 192.168.0.128: Connection timed out"

If I drop to shell, I can ping the VM just fine. I never get asked if I want maintenance or feature stream.

Any pointers on what I am missing here?

RE: LOVE (install IRIX from IRIX, LINUX or WINDOWS)
I could be wrong on this and I have no actual experience with this network installer. But reading the guide I'm wondering since you set up the VM yourself if you properly setup the RSH service or at least allowed it through the firewall? I'm assuming you turned off all firewall stuff in your VM anyway, right?

I'm trying to remember how the real IRIX network install actually works (ROBOINST), I thought that the initial sash and FX load is actually TFTP. And it also may be that the inst installer also is loaded through TFTP. But I know that every file afterwards is supposed to be through remote shell, RSH. I thought? I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. They didn't use SSH and so they used rshd.

That should be the connection it's actually complaining about. All the files before that were delivered via a totally separate transfer protocol. So I would assume that you've either not set up the Rshd process correctly in your debian install or your firewall is still blocking it. Or the directory it was given when as it's root dir when it was set up as a service is not allowed to access the IRIX files or folders that are carrying all your setup files. Either way I would look up the rshd setup and firewall configuration to solve this problem.

It's only briefly mentioned in step 0.3 of the instructions. And it only says to turn it off if it's already on your network. But the fact of the matter is that that is the delivery mechanism it's complaining about and I'm assuming that this LOVE software does not emulate it it simply provides a bunch of scripting and helpful labels for the TFTP process. I also assumed it emulated the TFT process itself because that's fairly easy to do. It probably doesn't emulate RSHD and therefore you have to have a genuine setup and working.

Again that's my assumption...
