Origin 300 is not starting

Origin 300 is not starting
I've acquired an Origin 300 that, unfortunately, is not working. I can connect to L1 and the L1 responds to some commands ("env", "serial", "version", "cpu") but after "power up" command, I can hear the fans starting and then ... nothing. After a while on terminal screen the message
"ERROR: no command response from 001c24, TIMEOUT"
appears. After that the L1 doesn't responds to any command, I have to disconnect the power in order to turn the fans OFF.
Should the fact that it was brick #24 into a bigger system maters? Should I try to reset the brick to "1"?
Any thoughts?
Tank you all for great help.

RE: Origin 300 is not starting
So, I'm not expert on this system but this looks like something on printed page 13 (PDF page 35) : https://irix7.com/techpubs/007-3938-003.pdf

This MIGHT be a "now" unknown system console. So the command output is trying to output to a non-existent console.

So I'm guessing you need to use "select" and select a known working console...my guess based on read the above.

Hope this helps or at least gives more info.

RE: Origin 300 is not starting
Hi blacksmith,

can you advise:
1. How are you connecting to L1 is this via "L1 Console Port" or L2 (via L1 USB)
2. Can you power up the machine just via the "on/off" button rather than via the L1 ?
3. What does the LED panel say when machine is running ?

When you are connected to "L1 Console Port" then you need to "toggle" from "L1" to the "console" using <Ctrl t> & <Ctrl d> as per manual that Weblacky linked to.

It might be that...
1. Machine starts with serial port connected to L1
2. On boot changes to "console", but console is not configured in the OS for serial port...

If this is the case then if you toggle using <ctrl t> then you might return back to L1 prompt..

Just speculating, as I am assuming the O300 (which I don't have) behave similarly to O350 (which I do have).

You could also try:
- booting with 1 serial cable connected to "L1 Console Port" and another to the first Serial Port, to see if you get boot diagnostics on the first serial port and not on the "L1 Console Port" or
- if you have L2 connect this to "L1 USB" and a serial cable to first serial port, to see if you get boot diagnostics on serial and via L2

Cheers from Oz,

jwhat/John

RE: Origin 300 is not starting
All my tests ware done with the cable connected to "CONSOLE" port. I don't have a L2 controller or an cable to connect to L1 (USB) port.
I will try to start it from front panel button and I will check the front lights also. Hopefully over the weekend, if I'll have the time, and report back.

Thanks again everybody.

I usually connect to my systems via serial port 1, this includes the Tezro.

Okay, your error was literally stated verbatim in the manual, like same identifier and everything so please read the page before you spin your wheels. It sounded like a 10 second fix, if I’m right.

RE: Origin 300 is not starting
OK....
I've got another O300 brick and this one works.
I checked for both the settings for console input / output  (L1 "select" command) and the settings are identical.
I've tried to start from front panel button and the result is similar except no more "TIMEOUT" and I could access the
"history" of the button pressing. Seems for me that is different from L1 "pwr up" command history, and is persistent. There are records from 2011.
The result of history, in my opinion is very conclusive. Is a defective power supply.
Next step is to remove the PS from working unit to use it in the one that doesn't work, for confirmation.
Until next weekend ....

Or a defective voltage monitoring circuit.

Unfortunately, that's not even unlikely. The Dallas monitoring chips are known for this, and in my experience PSUs either work or they don't, but they don't magically put out half the voltage.

A voltmeter would quickly clear this up. Swapping PSUs between units as well.

RE: Origin 300 is not starting
I swapped the power supply with no effect, same with VRMs and IO8 assembly.
The only components not interchanged are the fans, L1 display and the motherboard.
On the other hand, I've noticed on the motherboard are some diagnostic LEDs they are lit differently.
On the defective unit there are fewer LEDs lit compared with the working unit.
Does anybody know where I could find the meaning of this diagnostic lights?

Thanks everybody

RE: Origin 300 is not starting
I agree with Jan-Jaap, I don’t think there is any way your 5v aux circuit can run at 3.22v and 3.3v AUX cannot run at 1.7v. That’s so low the semiconductors would be in brown out.

So I’d agree you have one or more damaged DS1780 ICs reporting erroneous values. This has to be addressed first. I don’t recommend turning off env monitoring during troubleshooting as you’ll miss real alerts but either start replacing ICs or disable your env safety and see what actual errors you get.
