Mashek - opinion

RE: Mashek - opinion
He observes holidays and also some religious holidays you’d likely not track. I ended up doing both (email and call) but I’d give him 5 business days to respond and then I’d consider calling in reference to the email. Though be prepared to leave voice messages.

He is a nice guy but he does kind of disappear sometimes. For me it was that he had gotten sick over a few days after we started talking and then he also observed like two religious holidays so it was like 6 business days (straddling weekend) without communication during an active discussion.

I also was emailing him at doug@mashek.com directly (If that’s not the email you’re using, try it).

He is the type of person to be doing what he said, on his schedule so he may not give you daily updates once you ask him for something. He very much does what you ask and then gets back to you, but often doesn’t set any expectation of when that might be. So while you can trust him, be aware that he moves as fast as he moves and doesn’t give status updates during it. So often you’ll go several days between “touching base” on an active job. Again just a heads up. Still worth it but if you’re in a hurry, it doesn’t make the transaction move faster.

I've known Doug for at least a decade if not more. He's a super nice guy and very passionate about the hobby. He is a bit eccentric though and super religious. Which is fine, but you kinda have to keep him on task a little bit.

I have always had great experience from Doug.  Sometimes replies take longer, but he has told me it’s due to travelling.  His prices are IMO the best online.  His wife has many of his sgi times on ebay under seller 4pressious****** and is a fantastic seller.  Highly recommended

How's the experience in purchasing from Mashek?
Any issues or things to worry about?

Thanks!

I really don't like doing this because I also have had a few dealings with Mr Mashek that were very satisfactory. However ... a long time ago now, like over a year, I sent him a bunch of stuff in trade. A couple thousand dollars' worth, even at cheapskate prices. At retail they'd be enough to retire on ...

So he got the boxes, as confirmed by tracking, and .... nothing. For months. Every once in a while I'd send an email asking what was going on. I think he replied to one, maybe two with the usual "sorry, must have gone into spam, I'll look into it" and then once again, silence. It's been more than a long time now, well over a year.

So .... fine, but if I'm going to give stuff away, I'd rather it went to someone who at least sent a thank-you note and wasn't in the business of selling stuff he got free for decent money. Just for your info, there were four V12's involved, both Fuel and real Tezro versions. Nodeboards. Memory. New gig ethernet cards. IO-9's, risers, other O350 parts. We're not talking the koh-i-noor diamond here but yeah, I feel less than overjoyed about the situation.

I dunno. Maybe something changed in the bible and made cheating people okay. Damned if I know.

Only great things to say about Mashek. I've been buying from him since the year 2000 (purple Indigo2 Impact). I'm a repeat customer to this day, he has top quality, well cared for systems, tested, configured, great cosmetic condition. Just recently bought an O2 that looked like new right out of the box. I also bought all kinds of O2, Octane, and Indy parts, all top quality.

Absolutely agreed with you, which is why this transaction was so discouraging. I had the same experiences. And it's not like I've been pushy or unreasonable, it's been well over a year and I only ask "what's happening ?" every few months.

Things change, I guess. GM was once the best car maker in the country, too. Maybe Doug came down with Parkinson's or Alzheimer's or lupus and has no energy to get out of bed, I dunno, but this is the situation. If I had it to do over again I'd send the stuff anywhere else. Even free to indigofan :-)

So, just another data point on this subject. I know these things don't always go smoothly but this was pretty extreme. As in, thousands of dollars extreme :(
