Cleaning up a crude .stl model of an O2 to hopefully produce a good model of an O2

Ooof, man that is a lot of work.

Modern Maya actually has a really robust set of Retopo tools built in. They used to be called Nexus but Autodesk bought them and they are default part of Maya since about 2015 I think.

Zbrush zRemesher might be able to retopo it pretty good but one would have to draw the guide lines along the details to ensure that the small power details don't get lost.

I would likely do the same, by hand, method you are doing but... just using Maya's retopo tool set. Using the live object constraint so that one could just trace the old mesh and the new geo would shrink wrap to the original mesh. Draw large areas quickly and then use the add loops to fill in the spaces quickly.

Great work so far though.

--EDIT---

Just realized that if you get a good solid mesh going from the STL you could set it up for 3d printing and make replacement parts for the old O2 cases that are long gone.

Thanks man! Smile

It is allot of work indeed, but it's also a good mental exercise, so it's all good!

Have you tried Metasequoia?

In my own personal opinion there is nothing better available for modelling, and 150 USD for the EX version is not a bad price when there is frequent updates with improvements and new functionality for that same price. It does lots of things and does them very well.

I put a few good hours into this model today!

Nothing like 3D modelling with a good cup of coffee!

Here's what it currently looks like:

Again this is the original model:

You are getting so good at modelling that now I'm not sure this is a photo of a coffee cup or a render. XD

Thanks Man! Cool I still have a long way to go though!

By the way, here's a rendered cup of coffee and doughnut that I built up in blender. (I followed a tutorial to build this, in an attempt to get a fix on how to render more "organic" objects and scenes.)
