Trying to bring SGI Fuel Online

RE: Trying to bring SGI Fuel Online
Hi Megaimg,

see this thread: https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-2477.html

L1/l2 is installed with IRIX, as L1/L2 Controller Package (use swmgr to see installed sw).

If you are going to update L1/L2 use patch: PATCH SG0007149 (install via swmgr)

This will install final L1/L2 versions.

Do not update L2 with firmware version 1.44 from IRIX 6.5.30, it will kill L2.

The patch is available on IRIX Network and SGI Depot I believe.

As you are asking this, I assume your Fuel is now booting up ok.

Please advise that Fuel boots ok, as this is helpful to let others know that your issue was resolved.

Thank you.

RE: Trying to bring SGI Fuel Online
Why does it say cannot connect to keyboard in the errors? Can you please put a correct keyboard on it? SGI’s will throw a fit if you don’t have a keyboard and mouse on them during PROM interaction.

Just removing one additional issue.

Also what media are you placing in the dvd drive, what specific disk?

Thanks.

RE: Trying to bring SGI Fuel Online
Hi Megaimg,

yes you need keyboard/mouse connected to boot Fuel.

If you do not have them connected, you will get white/red blinking on the front door light.

Given what you have posted, the machine looks like it is actually ok.

I expect if you put a Fuel bootable IRIX HD in and had keyboard/mouse connected it would boot up ok.

Cheers from oz,

jwhat/John

RE: Trying to bring SGI Fuel Online
Note -- this:

Code:
A 000: *** TLB Refill Exception on node 0
A 000: *** EPC: 0xc00000001fc47e58 (0xc00000001fc47e58)
A 000: *** Press ENTER to continue.

is what you get if you attempt to start installation over serial while `console` is set to `g` (which I see it is from your printenv output). This is a weird bug in PROM and/or sash and/or whatever else, and seems to give people minor heart attacks (including me!) when they run into it. Go into the prom command monitor, type `setenv console d`, reboot and try starting the installation again.

RE: Trying to bring SGI Fuel Online
Hi Megaimg & others,

with PROM 6.211, I get this more helpful diagnostic (during boot without keyboard/mouse attached) via system board Serial Port:
>> ...
>> PS/2 Keyboard & Mouse diagnostics
>> No keyboard found, skipping keyboard test
>> No mouse found, skipping mouse test
>>
>> Missing PS/2 device(s) AND console set to "g"
>> PS/2 Keyboard & Mouse diagnostics passed with a possible problem

Interestingly with a valid OS installed you can boot via the serial port, by going into command prompt and doing a "single", to boot into single user mode. While as per vvuk, for install you need to first change the "console" variable to get install to kick off correctly.

Thanks for valuable tip.

Cheers,

jwhat/John.
