SGI Octane Demos trouble
Hi! I just bought  my first SGI Wink
This is Octane - 2xR12000, EMXI
A system message appears during boot - LIP TSB not completed
After installation IRIX (I use 6.5.30 and 6.5.22) I try to run any demo and the system freezes and exits to login window
Doom works well. System software works ok too
Hardware problem?

RE: SGI Octane Demos trouble
I don't think that boot message is related to your demo crashes. That's not a hardware issue.

No, your demos are probably not installed correctly. I have never cared for working demos so I always leave them out, but you may wanna try reinstalling them.

RE: SGI Octane Demos trouble
LIP TCB means Fibre Channel's Loop Initialization Process Transmit Control Block. This message means that the Fibre Channel HBA was unable to establish communication with any FC devices (which is normal, since you didn't connect any).

Exit to login window sounds like Xserver crash
check dmesg for errors (run command 'dmesg' from a shell)
You could also check the syslog ('more /var/adm/SYSLOG')

Well, you could run the diagnostics to find out. Interrupt the boot when it says 'press ESC to ..." and you get the PROM menu screen. Option 3 starts the diagnostics.

The best way to do this is using a serial console. Disconnect keyboard & mouse, and connect a null modem cable to serial port #1. Use a PC with 'putty' on the other end, serial connection parameters 9600-n-8-1. You get the same menu at boot but on the serial connection.

If you use the regular screen to run diagnostics, the graphics tests take over the screen and you don't see error messages anymore ;-)

You've got an MXE board and it has 2 texture boards installed. If you get diagnostics results complaining about texture errors, try to re-seat them.

Otherwise: if you want a *much* quieter system and don't need the FC board in the bottom right quadrant, remove it. With an option board in that slot, the system always runs the fans in hurricane mode.

Is this solution? - You've got an MXE board and it has 2 texture boards installed. If you get diagnostics results complaining about texture errors, try to re-seat them.

I'd remove them first to see if the error goes away.

RE: SGI Octane Demos trouble
The TMEZZ are the Texture Mezzanine cards. If you remove the graphics assembly from the system, and undo two nylon screws, yo can remove them from the graphics board. Irinikus is right -- you can run an MXE without the TMEZZ cards (it becomes an SSE). You have to remove both. I've seen this once maybe, and after cleaning the contacts with some pure alcohol, and re-seating them, the MXE worked fine again.

RE: SGI Octane Demos trouble
Thanks friends!

I checked without TMEZZ cards - all tests passed
I cleaned the contacts with alcohol and inserted and removed several times - FAULT (with error as abow)
I swapped modules - the same error.

one or both modules died?
I will search it on ebay and now use without them
