RE: Red Fever Trouble
Okay, I searched the web again for Sun 3/260. Bilder SUN 3-260 mit HD 667

T
he front of the machine holds the PSU upright, and right behind is the backplane. There is only a "dumb" rocker switch, there goes phase and neutral. And the J1-wires go to ground and +5V busbar. No magic there.

There are 2 possibilities: 1. the load for the PSU to start up in the first place is too low on my testbench (tried a HDD and then a 36 ohms resistor with no effect) 2. This PSU is not working correctly

The PSU will return to sender I guess

It's possible. 5 volts into 36 ohms is less than a watt, which to a 1000 watt PSU is nothing. I think you would need at least 100 watts of load for a test. That would be 20 5-ohm power resistors in parallel, or a medium size electronic load.

I tested with higher resistor values, but no success.

Nevertheless I took that thing apart, and it looks like new/rarely used. No dust, and all of that black glue is still elastic, like in my AX1500i for example. (note: this brownish stuff are no burn marks, but flux residue).

RE: Red Fever Trouble
For clarification, - and I should have mentioned this before, because of the somewhat famous 'bounty' concerning a PowerOne-PSU - Jan-Jaap is still committed to construct a PSU for me out of the rare parts he has got, nothing changed there. That takes time, because these parts are - as you all might know - unobtanium' in its purest form.

My sudden move has another reason:

Here with this SUN 4/260-PSI I am trying to "recruit" PSUs from other systems of that era as a means to keep our SGIs alive. Although at the moment this Fuji PSU is no recommendation at all. I'm going to add some pictures of the insides of this PSU, might be interesting nonetheless.

Inspired by Jan-Jaap's success with his Professional IRIS I roamed the German used Computer market again. And yeah - there she was: a new old stock Mighty-MITE-A! I tested this thing under load, and it runs flawlessly. Unfortunately there is no way I could upload that sweet smell :-) like new electronics from the 80ies (brand new VHS-Player in 1988 comes to my mind). Well I digress - I installed this beauty and my Crimson lives again!

Thanks to this community and the solutions that were already documentated I now can say: case closed.  Smile

A quick search for that PSU on this side of the pond only nets me 1000w max on any given model. I'll have to keep an eye out.

This unit seems to be designed for the European market, and was already bridged for 250V input. Perhaps the full 1500W can only be achieved with that voltage...?
And I will have to modify Crimson's PSU-holder-metal thingie, because this PSU is slighly too big to fit in with the rear closed.

Possibly. I would probably pay for shipping from the EU if another one came up.
