L2 Controller Boot Loop

L2 Controller Boot Loop
So with jan-jaap's instructions in hand, I built a plug to power an L2 controller I got off of eBay.

It powers up and talks to the serial terminal, however, she seems to be stuck.  It's crazy though, because it's not your typical reboot loop, where she'd reach point x and start again.  The device progresses into the loop and then reboots at random spots every time.

Here's the output from the console, idk if anyone has seen this before, but whatever tips you might have, I'm all ears...

RE: L2 Controller Boot Loop
One thing that hasn't been documented to try is replacing any electrolytic caps on the board. It was my thought that this is a power issue (obviously the entire board doesn't use 48V). So there are going to be coils and buck circuits to do DC-to-DC (downstep) conversions.

This really could be any number of things, but bad power could cause resets. What capacitors do you see?

If you see any inductors (coils) that normally indicates power conversion (they are the final stage), if you take a multimeter set to DC volts and measure on either side of a coil (neg against chassis ground), you'll see a "more stable" reading on one side than the other. If that voltage isn't stable enough or doesn't look high enough (like 2.8V instead of maybe 3.3v) that could be a sign of bad power at that spot.

There are going to different DC voltages, the question is, are they all within reason? If you want to just try a board-wide electrolytic cap swap, that might not be a bad thing.

RE: L2 Controller Boot Loop
Recurring theme is memory corruption, but the location is random. Memory corruption causes segmentation faults (signal 5).

The L2 software is a highly restricted Linux distribution. If the problem was bad RAM, it would crash the same way every time. Same for corrupt flash.

So the question is: what's the trigger causing malfunction of otherwise good RAM or flash. I think weblacky is probably right it may be power. Is your power brick capable of supplying enough current? I've been using a D-Link DSA-0421S in the past: 48V, 0.5A.

RE: L2 Controller Boot Loop
Yes, as mentioned the internal battery has nothing to do with booting issues. Just something to keep the RTC of a working L2...well...working.

Clearly there is instability, I still think power issues from bad internal passives (caps) so that’s what I suggest you measure/target next.

I doubt you need “more” power as 48v @ 0.5A is a huge amount of power for a small device, so increasing that amperage is not the issue here.

Also RAM normally uses 1.5v or lower. Modern RAM using something like 1.08v? You need very low voltage that is very stable to run a modern computer. If these voltages ripple, you’ll get crashing, freezing, resets, etc.

People have tried reflashing from good L2 images, it won’t change the result. Something on the hardware side needs fixing. Since it’s a small board, I’d still place my wager on DC - DC conversion issues.

RE: L2 Controller Boot Loop
I have had several similar issues with L2 controllers and found out that not all 48V wall adapters are the same, some are "noisy". You can see this with a scope.

If you have access to a variable bench power supply, try connecting it and see what current is being pulled. Make sure to limit the current setting of the supply to less that 1A in case a converter or cap is in fact bad inside. Otherwise the bad part will become obvious in spectacular fashion.

Also, I have seen issues when using certain laptops with L2s due to what seems like ground loops. The laptop would work when on battery but I would get random L2 behavior when the laptop was plugged in.

If none of this works PM me and I will send you a known good L2 for the cost of shipping.

RE: L2 Controller Boot Loop
With a proper power supply in hand (thanks mopar5150), the device is still stuck in a boot loop.

Even with new caps, and a proper power supply, it would seem that this busybox is busy no longer.

Did you try the serial-based l2recovery?

i did attempt to do this, however I did not find the files on my Octane 6.5.30 installation.

I think I might need to install some packages before I will be able to pull this off.
