Yo All,
I recently started doing some small work on my Octanes. I started with front door repairs and moved on to power buttons. I’ve only just gotten Octane-style systems, so I don’t have any real usage/experience on them (only what I've read).
I started with trying out the power button on the front panel, it was hard, squeaked, and generally didn’t even push down halfway. OK, well it’s not broken but it definitely doesn’t slide freely!
OK, to the fix, I have some CRC Electrical Silicone Lubricant. It’s a “dry” silicone spray designed for automotive plastic connectors. The issue being if you use it and then connect the lines, the plastic housing of the connectors will more easily connect and disconnect. This stuff is great for headlight connectors are well, better chance of easily removing the connector in the future! I don’t really spray it on contacts, just the surrounding plastic housing. Anyway, it’s a great product that’s for plastic surfaces and helps them slide after long periods of time.
Just what I need!
Now this stuff can leave a slight stain if left on plastic and if it then bakes on (from like engine heat). So you need to have a cloth and IPA and clean any regions you don’t want the lubricant on as soon as you notice it. Just wiping it won’t work, you need IPA too to be totally clear of the lubricant.
Take the front Octane panel off and look at the rear of the power button. There are several legs and holes. Use quick squirts, small amounts, in all the holes, I used more in the two large openings (larger arrows).
Watch the front for leakage and clean up with IPA (pic before clean-up).
Now actuate the power button gently, repeatedly, like 30-50 times. It will be hard and squeak at first (don’t force anything). You may need to add more lubricant as you go.
You’ll notice, within about 30 presses, it suddenly starts to get smooth, no more binding and no more squeaks! It gets even better and starts to smoothly move the entire length of the hole.
Move the button a little more, perhaps even a little more lubrication, and you’re done!
No more binding, power button actually works now!
It’s the little things…
