Dallas DS1286 RTC, many on ebay?
I went searching the web for my various options to replace an old, dead, DS1286 and found there are plenty on ebay right now, supposedly new? New old stock? I have to wonder how old? But even as just starting points for modding, they still have value to me dead. So buying 5 of them for about $24 US seems like a bargain. Granted they say it could be several months before they show up from China.

Anyone bought any of these? Anyone noticed them for sale on ebay? Seems in years past there were none, at least none listed as new on ebay? What's the deal? Are these knock off copies that just get the Dallas markings? Or old stock? There's no way they are new and recently made unless Maxim Integrated has put them back into production AND still put the Dallas branding on them and that's incredibly unlikely.

I'll post when/if they ever show up from China. I may or may not have and otherwise working Indigo2 to try them in by that point.

RE: Dallas DS1286 RTC, many on ebay?
I have purchased OLD - USED DS1286 Chips from a US supplier off eBay for my Indigo2s last year. I bought like 4 of them, drilled two so far, they worked great after modding and life went on. I have purchased 5 - DS1742W-120+ NOS from a california company via eBay that "look alright", but unknown.

Old Dallas designs DID NOT have "fresh keeper" tech in them. That's a later feature. So NOS will be dead, just like used, old, stock. Better to buy Used stock as it's likely genuine and drill it. Luckily I have all the chips I need for the units I have. But yeah, I've been hunting and grabbing chips when I can on eBay from good looking US sellers. China at your own risk, and it's too risky for me.

I wrote a drilling guide for Indigo2 Dallas here, if you have your original, mod the original, myguide makes it pretty easy: https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-1370.h...t=Drilling

Oh, I know your drilling guide. Good chance I'll use it. Part of why I bought the RTCs from ebay, I don't want to practice drilling and soldering on a chip that I pulled from an SGI.

But what do you think about this? I'm not great at soldering and would be happy to pay $10 and donate a dead DS1286 to get a nice clean solution that I can't mess up with my clumsy soldering.

Hmmm, I'd not seen that offering before. I KNOW from my first hack job that the real IC is at the bottom of all that epoxy. If they so choose, they could mill the entire 2/3rd of the epoxy off to get to the IC, then perform this to replace BOTH the battery and crystal (since you'd destroy the crystal too). Hmm, well I guess it's based on your skill and time.

I was scared to damage the IC from torsion. But If I can find my hack job, I might buy this board to repair it. You might try it. Price isn't that unreasonable.

Wow, just figured out HOW Glitch is reaching the internal DS1284!!!!! He's using a hot air gun and a knife tip on a soldering iron, I just removed ALL my epoxy with one. I'm creating a new thread for this topic and ordering one of those tops. I did damage to my crystal before, so I need it anyway!
