Fuel does not power up

RE: Fuel does not power up
Don't forget that you need an adapter as well! Although the PSU looks like an ATX one, the pinout is different. Kuba sells adapters that will convert an ATX PSU output to work with the Fuel.

Cool, I thought you might already be aware - but worth double checking just to ensure no loud bang and magic smoke Smile

Also, I still think you have ENV disease, this blog post lists errors that look like yours: https://bukosek.si/hardware/collection/s...lty-ds1780

I love the concept of env disease! :-) SGI did use 'cheap' parts for the Fuel!

The problem does sound similar to the blog you linked; unfortunately, in my case after 'env off' the system still doesn't respond to 'pwr on' command. Is there a way of "forcing" power on in the Fuel?

And, thanks for pointing to Bukosek's site, which I didn't know but has lots of interesting info!

RE: Fuel does not power up
Well, the site mentions that env disease isn't the same for everyone. Which is the point I'm trying to repeatedly state.

It depends on HOW they fail. You see he mentions my theory I stated originally, if the IC failed SHORT, on the i2c bus..then turning off L1 reading env doesn't magically get the i2c working again...it just ignores the readings...which it doesn't have anyway...because it has no i2c bus working to read anything from. If they had failed open, you'd get erroneous readings for a single IC, but your i2c bus wouldn't be shorted, so the rest of the ICs would work (that's the version where turning off env works).

That was the point I am trying to make, some people end up with the the non-working IC version with functioning i2c bus. That link proves there is a failure mode where the i2c bus is shorted until you fix it...which means no communication of any kind (that's why the author claims he was forced to fix it, because the bus was shorting).

I'm told the fuel has like 5 of these env ICs, 3 on mainboard, 1 on PIMM, and 1 on Graphics card (assuming they are what went), I only know one is between the PCI slots (from old nekochan postings), but the other two, I don't know.

Since you don't need them for booting, you could remove one at a time and boot the L1 and hope the other error messages magically disappear (meaning you got the shorted one). Then simply install new ICs (they are still made, I got 20 ICs off a US seller on eBay for cheaper than Digikey). Knowing which one went might be hard, I tried to lookup what a shorted I2C bus might look like, but it can take on many forms. It may not be a literal short, it might be an IC holding it High or Low indefinitely.

So again, assuming you have either desoldering tweezers or a IC removal tip for a professional soldering iron, I'd just note and then remove the Monitoring ICs, one at the time and try booting after each removal, hoping you'll get it early.

I highly doubt your PIMM env IC went and I already asked that you try the L1 without your graphics card (won't boot an OS without a graphics card but L1 should start and you can check errors then) to see if that solved it (dead Graphics V12 is a thing).

I'd bet better odds it's one of the three env chips on the mainboard itself. Don't try to use hot air to remove them...you'll most likely end up destroying nearby components unless you preheat the main board. Use irons and/or hot tweezers for removal.
