New Browser 2020 Discussion

RE: New Browser 2020 Discussion
I checked out Browservice. The performance wasn't as bad on my local server when I had me and a friend who was over each do our own requests over it compared to WRP, but I think that in order to make it a public service you would need a couple of things including an authentication system, and I won't do LDAP, and a rate limiter to prevent too many people from logging on at once to use it.

Why make it a public thing at all? It would be better to just work on a wiki page for local setup instructions I think.

Potentially, it was just an idea.

I can create instructions for NetBSD or FreeBSD likely, but someone would need to do Linux

Personal stuff has kept me away from home and eaten up my free time but this next week I should have some time to spare. I'll try to work on a guide for setting up Browservice on x86-64 Linux (Ubuntu) and on a Pi 3B+ (Raspbian) for the wiki.

I did try it out with my O2 by the way and it seems to work pretty good but the SD card in my Pi died shortly after. I'm gonna set it up again and see how it works with WebKit on my PowerBook for sites that don't usually render right

Thanks, that's kind of what I expected. I've also used vnc, it was okay but not as good as X but better than your experience displayed above, actually worked okay, with Windows the best success I've had was rdp.  Rdp can do some weird things if you are remoting to someone's computer without telling them and they are also using the same browser simultaneously, what's going on ? Oh, I dunno, must be something wrong with your computer, maybe log out and back in Tongue

But, yeah ..... besides performance, it's already there and it works presto-changeo, no effort beyond typing -display irixbox:0 after the start command. Even I can handle that :-)

RE: New Browser 2020 Discussion
I've been putting off making a followup on this, but I have been testing and using various browsers on other systems I listed in the initial post; and I have some updates on it:

1. Amaya. I've been using it off/on, and it's really annoying. I can't in good conscience suggest we honestly pick this, tbh. It's not worth our time. The libwww even on Windows or Linux leaks memory like a sieve. 0/10 would not recommend!

2. Newer Firefox. I think a 3.5 port is attainable, but potentially problematic. I have not managed thus far to get anything working, but give me some time to try and reconcile the codebase changes between the two...

RE: New Browser 2020 Discussion
Hi Community,

IRIXNET has a public hosted Browservice on: http://proxy.nekotopia.io. You can use HTTP or HTTPS and the AUTH is: irixnet / irixnet. It is not the panacea but if you set it to your 'homepage' on your legacy browser then for sure your experience will be greatly improved. It's the latest linux version and I'll keep it updated as the GITHUB is updated.

But this is the last time I'm gonna chime on this subject because it's a little disheartening that the system was built and sits unused. If it doesn't get an uptick then I can spin down the NGIX reverse proxies and browservice nodes and put that compute to some other use.

For clarity: no code required. Point and shoot. There is no logging, I don't track the traffic and all I ask is fair-use and don't do anything stupid. Eventually we might drop it behind the walled-garden but until such time it's open for you to use and share.

Regards
Rich

P.S. I'd rather have a relevant browser :-) not a disrespect to any input on that subject. But to bridge the gap, this is a good workaround.

EDIT: Added the postscript.

Thanks for doing that. I hope to use it soon. Both my machines are out of commission at the moment, Sad   waiting for a stash of parts from Ian to get them up and running again.

Ah, waiting for Ian. I know that one!

When he reads this he’ll drop his rare and vintage Cray mug. (/me mutters)

Most welcome dude. Most most welcome.

No Disrespect to Ian was intended. I live in New Zealand. That is pretty much as far as you can get from Scotland.
