Yeah I've been looking at this off and on. I still argue that proxies like this are an inferior solution.

RE: New Browser 2020 Discussion
They're not perfect, but the reality is that even if we ported a reasonably up-to-date browser (which would be very difficult anyway), a lot of SGIs such as Indigos, Indigo2s, Indys and slower Octanes are going to really struggle with processing power to render modern sites. Ultimately it is a trade-off between rendering modern web pages with some degree of accuracy, but also making sure that the end result is usable on older SGIs.

I can't think of an easy way around this, other than somehow offloading the rendering to a newer computer on your LAN.

HTML5 and CSS3 aren't particularly computationally intensive. It's Javascript, and as much as people talk about that, a lot of the non-social media sites WILL work without it. NoScript is still useful in this day and age. All I'm concerned about is better HTML5 and CSS3 support, we can worry about MIPS JS when someone ports LLVM (LLVM has a javascript interpreter we could use!)

RE: New Browser 2020 Discussion
Hi y'all,

So I spent an hour tonight building browservice in a VM on my desktop. I installed one in Ubuntu server and desktop (both 20.04) just for completeness. Everything was patched up and I followed the instructions mostly except some of the scripts didn't go as planned they were good enough for me to get it done. Service ran fine and there were no errors, it is stable enough.

In conclusion of the testing however, I tried Firefox3 and SeaMonkey 1.1.20 on my O2 IRIX 6.5 and they refused to load the PNG image. In contrast, the WRP proxy did load just fine but was an unhealthy user experience. The browservice does work fine as I could use it no problem using Firefox on Linux and Chrome under macOS (both being modern browsers of course and not relevant except to prove the service was running).

So, shame I couldn't use it but if anyone else had any luck and can point me in the right direction I'll give it another go.

Have you tried the jpg option. Might be an issue with your png library. For me it worked fine with Mozilla 1.7.12

Just for fun, want to try this ?

Open a terminal on your O2, type  O2>rlogin Ubuntubox

then via rlogin, from your ubuntu box, smartguy>fireflop -display O2_ip:0

(that isn't the correct startup command for fireflop but you get the picture, yes we see ?  that's when I fell for, the telnet in the pack .. oh wait.

Anyhow, what happens ? I never had loonix to play X with but rdp worked excellent with winders.  I was never impressed with vnc, either.

@ducks - I did not, will try later on. I didn't even see the option to be fair although I should've noticed since it has a big PNG text so...I'll click it I guess ;-)

@hamei - exactly, that's a neat and workable solution in't it. Vroom vroom! (Leader of the pack).

I was watching a YouTube last night about a guy installing browsers from Mosaic and Nutscape under Windblows10 It wasn't a very scientific nor a thorough test but it wasted a few minutes. Apparently he did a 'deep dive' on Netscape history but I didn't see that yet. Of course there are other videos covering similar material but it's always nice to see something new. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaOzsEawyHg

@ducks - I have no idea what happened last time but tonight FF3 loaded with no issues using PNG. I just loaded up the page same as before and bang, worked fine. I mean - it's slow as all hell, but it works.

@hamei - yeah this is totally workable. I mean this could really be good enough except for the scalability. I used a lot of thin client stuff in the past where the apps are loaded over the net and this is definitely an option for NIX boxen I agree. I did wonder if the font types would be an issue but it seems to work and render fine.

Screenshot showing FF3 (3.0.19) rendering using the Browservice running under Ubuntu 20.04 workstation and the same Ubuntu instance pushing FF 78.0.2 over X11 to the O2 desktop :0

I had the opposite result. For me Browservice was a lot quicker. I used X forwarding through ssh, so I'll try with rlogin to see if that is quicker.

Last post on this one probably, I just wanted to do a one-take video to show using the browservice and x-windows options we've covered above.

Maybe it'll be nice to see? Sorry for any technical mistakes or lack of detail.
