Building COVID-19 in Maya 6.5

RE: Building COVID-19 in Maya 6.5
I'm sure that the standard renderer can use more than 4 CPU's!

I've just animated this scene and am currently batch rendering it to an SGI movie format.

Even in the batch render mode, the standard renderer, has the option to make use of all available CPU, whereas mental ray does not!

I'm carrying out an initial render of 50 frames at 800x600. If the result is good, I will then render it at 1920x1080!

Mental ray can definitely use 4 CPUs, so the difference is moot on a tower Tezro. If you're right though then a 2-brick O300
with 8x500MHz should come close to your quad-1gig for the standard renderer.

One thing though, at a lower res it's possible the Tezro will gain from having a larger L2; hard to be sure.

I'm busy with this scene at the moment, but I can maybe package my Indy scene, with all of its required textures in a directory that I just save as a .tar file, as it would be more fitting as an SGI benchmark. (It's also setup to use final gather, which will really work your machine!)

This video gives you a bit of insight as to the process of animating "THE VIRUS" scene using and SGI Tezro. This was made possible due to the greater efficiency of the Standard Maya Renderer!

Good idea on the Indy scene thing! Let me know. 8)

Re the Maya sw renderer, someone in the know told me it's ok for basic stuff but a studio would never use it for photorealistic goals. Smile

The difference is the fact that the mental ray is a pure raytrace renderer. However, in this case, the blur resulting from the dept of field definitely looks better when rendered using the Maya renderer.

I too prefer the Maya renderer in this instance.

And with an animation the subtle gains of MR are lost imho.

The mental ray renderer really seems to come into it's own, when you employ "final gather", as I've done in the latest scene I've posted "Pocket Universe". I'm very happy with the result achieved in that rendering.
