MS caves to a Christmas troll
https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/87268

Ohhh boy. I normally wouldn't touch an issue like this, but the ridiculousness needs to be underwritten here:

1. Christmas in the wider world is heavily commercialized and secularized. Even Japanese people have their own spin on Christmas... in a country that's less than 2% Christian. Suffice to say, less people are celebrating "Christ's Mass" so much as the heavily westernized and secularized holiday of gift-giving.

2. This guy's stick is so far up his ass that it's offensive. No, Christmas isn't a holiday that's killed Jewish people. He also disparages pagans in the linked article.

3. I think the majority of us are well-adjusted adults enough that even if, like myself, you don't celebrate Christmas (I don't because I'm a quasi-pagan of sorts) you're not gonna go around pissing on santa hats, which come from 1920s ads of Coca-cola which popularized earlier designs of Santa.

Let's sit around, appreciate the [Image: avatars-000459639234-nu0eef-t500x500.jpg] we live in, and lament about a time where we could be festive and happy about things without getting suddenly offended.

Is it ironic to point out that the guy's name is Christian? Smile

I think that when people take on the snowflake mentality that it exacerbates the effects of Poe’s Law to the point that even blatant trolls must be taken seriously and pandered to. There is no one who can convince me that this guy is not a troll. In a sane and reasonable world he would be told to pound sand up his ass. Why would they give this fool the time of day, let alone do what he wants?

Excuse me while I go pretend to be a black disabled multigendered midget who identifies as a potoato so that they’ll add the Santa hat back.

RE: MS caves to a Christmas troll
I'm so over all things Abrahamic.

Yet, I am also over the entire Neo-Marxist modern epoch as well.

Do I want people to have equal rights? Yes.
Do I want the best opportunities for everyone? Yes.

Am I tired of all the damn desert religions feeling like they are the most precious thing on Earth and without them things would descend into chaos?

YES!

Sometimes people do a very typical "Are you anti-semetic" because I make an observation about Palestinian kids being mowed over in Gaza.
If they would have waited they would have also heard that I hate imagining innocent little jewish kids also getting killed in rocket strikes.

Yet, here, a man sees a santa hat and equates it with millions of jews dying. What an ace wildcard.

I should convert to Judaism and start being offended by everything when I can't get what I want.
Seems like the ultimate guilt trip sauce.

Again, I digress, my issue isn't with "jews" in general. Nor "Christians" or "Muslims".

Its this idea that somehow being offended because of the pain in the past is some kind of real measurement of willpower and justice.

You think I can be offended by a rising sun flag? Just because I have family that fought in the pacific?
I love Japanese culture and feel quite happy I can embrace it even with the past our two countries share.

Its like I look at Isreal and Palestine... OR even Israel and the whole middle east... and think.....

…."Hey, Japan and the USA went through Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima/Nagasaki and I think even with Pearl Harbor that the bombs we dropped were way too harsh a punishment in retrospect. Maybe that is what was needed to stop a worse situation....

But am I offended at Nintendo? Offended at Anime?
Are Japanese offended by Star Wars or Atari?

No. For the most part. We get along better than we ever did before the war.

To hear this guy ranting about millions of jews makes me furious. Its like... yeah.. sorry buddy. too fucking bad. Deal with it. Its a hat. Move on.

You know why?

Because the rest of us can and do. Millions of Japanese, Germans, French, Belgian, Russians, Americans, and many more died in WW2. Many more than all the jews in history put together in one lump. Christians get upset about being persecuted too.

Its like they can't possibly consider that life goes on. You can stay stuck in that hang up and the rest of us capitulate to that kind of continued poisoning of our sense of catharsis OR they can realize that everyone was slaves and persecuted at one time or another to the tune of millions.

Americans have 9/11 and say never forget but we still allow mosques. Why? Because we know those guys in those planes didn't really represent the religion anyways.
So finally, given all that context... HOW... how does a santa hat represent millions of jews deaths?

I wouldn't have changed it.

I would have simply said... OK... go use another software and stop filling this forum with your own personal hangups because the Santa Hat I no way represent what you are projecting on it. Go get therapy and deal with it in your own way.

The rest of us are going to still play Nintendo and eat sushi, watch Star Wars, and drag race American and Japanese cars in a post WW2 world even though you are still stuck in the past.

RE: MS caves to a Christmas troll
Intuition, I'm glad that you managed to get that out of your system. I know the feeling. It just builds and builds until you can't take it anymore.

As those who have known or interacted with me know, I'm not a Christian, Jew or Muslim. I practice a belief that's best described to an uninterested person as Japanese paganism. It's not exactly, but I get too tired to explain the nuances.

The whole situation with religious beliefs has changed for me a bunch. I don't celebrate Christmas, but I deal with it and tolerate it because my family enjoys it, my girlfriend enjoys it, and my siblings enjoy seeing me. So I sit and shut up about how Christmas is for a few weeks to make them happy. It's not the most comfortable thing, and I usually drink heavily and eat like a pig; but you sacrifice things for people you care about.

The thing is, I've grown numb to Christmas. I deal with it because it's transient, and it doesn't hurt me that much. It sucks to be inundated with it at times, but after one year where my Jewish friend invited me over for Hanukkah and all his family did was bitch about the pagan being present (me), I grew thankful my family keeps it to themselves.

I do not stand for when Jewish or other people come into a conversation, though, and try to bitch about Christianity. Yeah, we get that you don't get along with Christians. My Muslim friend doesn't always either, he's far too conservative for many of them; but all the same you're in one of the safest and most prosperous nations in the west. If you really didn't want to be around Christians, there's always Israel, the actual bona fide home of the Jewish people.

Respectfully, not gonna comment on the situation in the Levant. Let's say that I feel that both the Israelis and the Palestinians have legitimate grievances about how it's handled, but ultimately I feel like choosing sides in the conflict nowadays is akin to putting a target on your back, so I'll refrain.

If you guys need to vent, by all means I don't mind. Just try to keep it relatively tame. I don't like censoring people, especially when I agree with them, but let's avoid any rants that would reflect poorly on the site itself. I sure am trying to leave that shit behind. The only thing I care about now is ensuring the community isn't taken for a ride by people with less scruples. I'm an asshole, but an honest one. I won't rob you blind in an alley or cut you if you cross me. LAWL.

RE: MS caves to a Christmas troll
People believe allot of things, but as soon as you state the words: "I believe", it automatically implies that you really don't know!!!

Just because somethings written in a book doesn't give it any validity at all, if you cannot test it or prove it to anyone else!!! (This applies to all prescribed religion!)

Whenever anyone tells you something, you must always ask yourself, who has told me this and why??? (Who ultimately benefits?)

In this world you get leaders and you get followers! Followers are usually termed "sheep", and what usually happens to sheep? (They usually get fleeced or slaughtered or both!)
A shepherd only tends to or protects his sheep, so that they can be sheered of slaughtered at a later date! (Think about it!)

All you have is your personal experience, and that is that!!!

This is what I think of God: (I couldn't agree more, with Trent Reznor's brutal honesty here!!!)

NiN is certainly a talented project by Trent. I do hold some of the same sentiments towards Abrahamism. But those same dogmas and beliefs do not extend to all faiths.
