O2 hardware question

O2 hardware question
I have been debating between two machines latey both are O2's, have 128Mb ram the difference is one is a r5000sc @ 200Mhz the other is a r 10000 @ 250Mhz also the r10k O2 has the AV1 board installed whereas the r5k O2 has the audio only board, I'm kind of torn there is a price difference between the two (roughly 50 bucks) the other thing is since one has a r10k that leaves one drive not usable. My goal with this machine is N64 development and other artistic pursuits as well as being introduced to the IRIX OS and its quirks so I would like to ask if someone could weigh in on this and give some advice.

RE: O2 hardware question
Go for the R10k version, as you can upgrade that machine to an R12k in the future if you want to.

The performance difference between the two CPU’s in question is not simply a function of MHz.

R10k will be quite a bit faster, much faster, for storage just whack a 36/72/146 gig drive in there and you’re set. Alternatively set up a samba / nfs share for storage.

No brainier really for me Smile

Noob question here, what is the main differences between a 300Mhz R5k and a 300Mhz R10k processors?

The R10K is a newer CPU architecture and accomplishes more per clock cycle, making it more powerful.

However, the R16K, for example, is simply a die shrink on the R14K, allowing it to clock at a higher speed. This is clearly shown in the results of the Blender tests that I carried out. My Tezro, which is equipped with 4 R16K's@1GHz is exactly twice as powerful as my Onyx2 equipped with 4 R14K's@500MHz.

Thank you all for your input r10k machine it is then, currently rearranging setup to accommodate the new machine and working toward acquiring it, considering my current situation I feel an UPS for this machine is in order (electrical work in this house is shoddy at best)

Are you able to collect the machine yourself? I would certainly suggest that you pick it up yourself if at all possible, as these machines are extremely fragile. You certainly don't want to end up with a box full of broken plastics, an unfortunate experience that many including myself have had!
