Mental Ray Material In Maya 6.5
I'm not seeing any Mental Ray shaders in my version of Maya 6.5. Are these somewhere that need imported?

I was under the impression they come built in... when you go to render something you should have a "mental rey" option

MentalRay can be enabled in the plugin section. Maybe it is just disabled.

Try going to WINDOWS > Settings Preferences > PlugIn Manager.

A UI list with all the plug ins will come up.

There should be a Maya to mental ray check box called Mayatomr.**.

Check the two boxex to load and autoload and it should show up every time you load Maya.

Yes, I'm familiar with the plug-in not being enabled issue, I'm looking for Mental Ray shaders in the hyper shade material selector. I have everything but the MR shaders.

Apparently in Maya 6.5 for IRIX there's a drop-down box just below the "Create" tab that is labeled Mental Ray nodes. I'm used to using more modern versions of maya I guess... I'm still not seeing the normal shaders that are in newer versions. These are mib_illum_blinn type shaders in 6.5, there's no mia shaders.

Oh, sorry yes...

you should be able to tell hypershade to build the Mental Ray list.

The default Maya materials (lambert, Phong, Blinn, etc) are all there default but there is a drop down above the shader list that says "Create Maya Nodes".
It is just below the "Create" and "Bins" Tabs.

You should be able to click on this and find Build Mental Ray nodes and the list will change to Mental Ray featured shaders.

Though I think the Mental Ray shaders in 6.5 didn't have a default physically correct fresnel model like Mia Material X that shows up in Maya in later versions.

The MR shader that can be created only have 6 attributes, they're not like the MR shaders in newer versions. They're 6 basic attributes like color, ambient, diffuse.... There's no transparency or any of the other attribs.

Does anyone have MR shaders and do they have attributes beyond the basics that I mentioned?
