Well here's an honest question, has anyone - or rather - any software company given you shit for links posted on here? I've had Irix software (with licenses) available on my website for many years, with never a complaint.

No but the burden is on me as a system administrator. You're not liable for what you post I am liable for what you post. Look over the DMCA safe harbor provisions. When I receive a request to remove a link directly I have a certain amount of time to remove it and there is very little I can do unless I actually have written permission to post the files.

Sometimes though they don't go through me, they might go through the hosting provider or the domain provider and in a lot of cases they don't give you a chance to even respond properly; you might even end up with your website data confiscated.

It's a really guilty until proven innocent system so I try not to open myself up to liability. You might see it as me being overkill but I would rather not risk having hiccups with the website here.

That's why I run my website from a server in my own house. My upstream provider is Comcast, a company which basically ignores any complaints sent to their bitch list email address. Comcast is an African word for "we don't give a shit."

We're talking about software that's more than 20 years old. Current development cycles, at least where I work, are six months. No one in the software universe gives any sort of a crap what we do with a binary from 2006. If they do, give me a heads up and I'll put my lawyers on the case.

The case law on postings made to publicly available forums is pretty much settled. You have nothing to fear. If that weren't the case there would be no publicly available forums.
