If you want to do that, I'd either use a VGA to HDMI adapter with a cap card (I got video from an o2 with this in the past) or a specialized cap card like a VGA2USB, DVI2USB,
or one of those Startech adapters every retrogamer seems to love.
That way you'll get direct hardware capture and everything will "just work". Using a VGA splitter makes it even easier to record.
