Should work. Do you have an xserver installed on the Windows machine (like Xming)?

Additionally, if remote desktop is really what you want you could probably use XRDP for this as well.

I came here to say this - I haven't actually tried it with IRIX, but at work this is what I use for admining Solaris and Linux systems

You can also use XDMCP to get a full desktop.

Just use Xming, there you can do an X query. Enter the IP of the IRIX machine there and enjoy your desktop

So could I use this to record my o2 from my win7 machine using Camtasia? That would make the vids much clearer vs my iPhone on a stand.

The ssh/xserver options are by window, not full desktop. (See the imgur link in my earliere post--I typed gr_osview in a ssh window and a new window appears on my Windows desktop). If that works for what you're doing, then yes.
Also be warned that programs that rely on specialized hardware (lots of video and 3D applications of the era) won't work remotely using a simple xserver.
