The reason why I don't is because that would induce a huge amount of disk space load. Disk space is still limited and stingy from web hosts and as someone who unlike other sites does pay for professional DC hosting for uptime and flexibility reasons.
Additionally the CPU load involved with resizing images is quite immense when you're having to do it dozens of times a day. That would require inevitably a much faster CPU on the VPS that this site is hosted on.
All in all I don't have the infrastructure necessary to enforce a local image uploading policy and we have in fact lost attachments in the past because of the use of third-party stuff so I don't even think it's fair to guarantee that.
If people want to use external image hosts, they are welcomed to.
I can probably at some point modify their post and upload the images locally but I'm not doing this every time an image host disappears
