Crazy way to start building some big iron but what the hell, you only live once right? 😁

"strap it to a pallet..." "lift gate truck..."

Well he did not specifically indicate you will need a crane, so you are probably in the clear. Tongue

Reminds me of the guy who bought himself an IBM z-class mainframe, ended up excavating his land so he could force it inside his basement. Now that is commitment.

I like the part where he is pondering the wiseness of his decision when handling the 30A power plugs.

RE: I am sooo tempted...
The G brick is roughly the size of a deskside Onyx, so I don't think you'll need a truck to transport it.

But:
* I don't think it runs on 110V. I believe it expects 220V (single phase), 32A, though it may work on a 16A circuit.
* It's loud. Really loud.
* It's just the graphics brick. You need an O350 or O3000 to feed it.

A deskside Onyx2 is a more friendly entry into the world of big iron graphics. It has the NUMA architecture, the IR graphics, and it won't get you divorced

Too late!

She left me 5 years ago when I tried to "heat" the baby's crib by installing a server underneath it.
Anyway, after speccing out what it would cost me to get the rest of the rack going to make this a possibility, I think I'll leave it alone for now.

(JK about the server, I am 5 years single now but it wasn't because of any technological philandering) Wink

PS: this guy was one of my secret heroes, got a place with some kind of old post-nuclear bunker built underneath it so he was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of setting up a big iron farm of Cray supercomputers with Sun servers.
Get nostalgic and follow along with his photographic memories!

RE: I am sooo tempted...
I say fuck it and go for it. I bought two G-bricks with 2 O350's last year because that sort of deal doesn't come up often, and I jumped on it when I had the ability to make it happen (still not powered up, I need to up the power coming into my house, then I need to run a 220 circuit to my room, etc etc, no money for that atm...)

they are very heavy, I don't know if you can even lift it with two people (edit: more so because of lack of handles or anything to really make a good grip with). You would have to take the cards out, then the G-brick is manageable with two people.

Remove the power supply too. The rest is still quite heavy, but one person can lift it. I did when I built an Onyx2 rack Smile
When I come to think of it, I only removed the power supply, not the cards.
And get some gloves to protect your hands from possible sharp edges.

Disclaimer. Don't do this with a bad back Tongue
