Repair loud bearing/jet-engine whine from old HD?

Question  Repair loud bearing/jet-engine whine from old HD?
It was surprisingly hard to find real concrete information about this online, searching via Google (other than typical "did you try [totally irrelevant troubleshooting step]").

The old HD I'm using in my O2 is _very loud_.  The typical loud whining noise from old drives that I've heard described as "failing bearings".  Is this something a person could reasonably resolve/repair themselves?  I do most hardware repair myself, including replacing PCB components (as long as someone has identified the proper one to replace -- I am no electrical engineer haha)...  Any helpful info anyone could share on this would be appreciated.  Somehow I just can't find definitive info regarding what is physically causing the sound, other than occasional comments about failing bearings.  Not much for me to go on!

Guess my alternative solution is to see if there are ultra wide SCSI adapters I could use with a scsi2sd device Wink

The SCSI2SD is going to be very slow. You're better off with a Fujitsu MAS replacement drive (or just about any "new") 80 pin drive. The 36gb fujitsu in my O2 is pretty silent, but then so is the 18gb Compaq in my Octane, hardly makes a sound, just a very soft clicking with head access.

No longer active. Please do not contact me.

Hmm, you mean 68-pin, right (isn't that what the O2 uses)?

I see one local guy on craigslist has a Fujitsu MAS 36gb 15k drive for $20... might have to go that route then heh Smile

No, the internal drive has an 80 pins SCA connector. You can connect external devices, either with HD68-HD68 or HD68-HD50 cables, but using that as a root drive will require you to set parameters in the PROM menu to identify the boot volume and root drive.

You can find more information in the O2 hardware reference guide : http://www.sgistuff.net/hardware/systems...002-o2.pdf

'Rehubbing' a HD requires (no workaround) about $2000USD worth of very, very specialized tools to open the drive, dock and remove the head mechanism, stabilize (lock together) the platters, remove the platter stack... before you can even get the the motor in order to replace it. Then you'd need an exact spare of the drive for parts.

It's a can of worms you probably don't want to open.

Clone to a new 15k RPM badass! Biggrin  You'll be much happier with it.

Ah! That's exactly the kind of info I was curious about -- thanks so much!! Very interesting... will have to read about that (just out of curiousity, since I'll obviously never do the actual "rehubbing", haha)

Have a look at these for an eye popping experience. Can't find the tool manufacturer I got my HD tools from previously, but seems Alibaba, and a few others pop up from searching Google. There's a reason enterprise clients pay upwards of $1000 per GB for recovery, or at least used to when HD were way expensive. **Also be aware that all of this work is ONLY to get a drive working long enough to recover data from the platters, after which it's documented and put in the donor drive pile.

The platters are not being saved for reuse in the first disassembly in this video.
