IRIXNet Architecture and Features Explained
This is designed to be a simple and easy to understand explanation of the reasons IRIXNet is set up the way it is.

The heart of the site is our forums. IRIXNet previously had a live discussion but ultimately I disliked it and dislike the people that tends to attract. As such I'm probably never going to have such a thing ever again here. At some point I'm going to go through and scrub what remains of chat/discord features because it proved wholly unnecessary.

Live discussions are great but it does not offer the ability to maintain permanence. Especially on a proprietary platform like Discord. Discord can delete a channel or server at anytime for any reason and it will wreck a community.

The forums run a customized MyBB 1.8. I track the upstream versions pretty closely and apply my own modifications to it. I am no PHP master but I can handle basic stuff just fine. It runs on NetBSD and no other services hang off that server for security reasons.

We have a deprecated wiki at the moment and a gallery. I have been paying a developer to replace the gallery but things have been rocky as of late because of financial issues. That being said I will continue to let it be a thing and eventually it'll probably happen.

The wiki is deprecated only because it's really hard to keep up with the maintenance of it. I chose the tiki wiki unwisely, and it is bloated and messy. I'm going to replace it at some point with mediawiki which we had in the past.

Besides that we have a bunch of basic HTML pages and archives. We also offer some file distribution services but I should know that we don't encourage software piracy here and as of 2024 there is legislation to push through kyc on most types of web hosting and if that happens all of the proprietary software is going to leave our servers with the exception of IRIX operating system and SGI distributed software because I do have somewhat of an implicit understanding at the moment that it's okay to distribute as long as we don't paywall/profit off it.

I have very grandiose plans that may never pan out, but the eventual idea was to build a portal which would act as a browser hub for SGI machines. It would be more than just a homepage, you could view everything from weather, to news, to forum posts and even maybe see videos eventually. The unfortunate thing is that I have a full-time job and I'm usually pretty exhausted by the time that I get back to my house.

There are others here obviously who help me run the place. Anyone with a yellow tag in their name can be reached for assistance.

I'm the system admin of this site. Private security technician, licensed locksmith, hack of a c developer and vintage computer enthusiast.

Technical problems should be sent my way.
