Happy to be back!
Hi everyone,

I just finally got re-registered after my old Irix.cc login no longer worked.  Real life has been busy since 2015 and I never really got around to searching for a new SGI community again after the demise of Nekochan.  For a while I was discouraged because my Onyx2 developed some hardware problems and all of the content from Nekochan seemed lost.  Recently my kids have gotten older and I've had more free time.  I got interested in my SGI machines again so I troubleshot and repaired my Onyx2, and am using my machines frequently again for various minor projects and play networked games with my daughter.  That inspired me to look for discussion groups again and I eventually found my way here and was happy to see so many names familiar to me from Nekochan!

Anyway, not sure if any of you remember me (I was never a voluminous poster) but I am happy to have found y'all again!

I actually registered on this forum in early October, but was caught in the registration bug that Raion just fixed.  I saw a post about it on reddit today so re-registered and now I can post again!  I had been forced to just lurk for the past couple of months.

I'm glad to hear that we're now working reliably for you. Yeah my career has changed I am now a locksmith and I unfortunately haven't been able to pay attention to the forum as much as I preferred.

I joined Nekochan 10 years ago because my coworker was "TheBulbGuy" aka a surfer accented dude named Will. We both worked at a joint in Virginia Beach and he had a fuel on his desk.

Currently my biggest project involving the SGIs has been a tool chest program I've got on the back burner, and I had a simple text editor I was working on in motif. At some point I will finish those.

I'm the system admin of this site. Private security technician, licensed locksmith, hack of a c developer and vintage computer enthusiast.

Technical problems should be sent my way.

Welcome back!

Glad to hear you were able to sort the Onyx 2 issues. Was an infrequent poster on Nekochan but am slowly trying to incorporate myself here.

Lots of great people and great advice here!

In the spirit of archiving information can you give us more information on the Onyx2 problem you had and how you fixed it?

Sure, but there isn't a ton to say.  My Onyx2 would fail to power up when you turned the key, and reported "PSU FAIL" on the MSC.  Life was busy at the time and I set it aside for a few years.  It was initially consistent but recently I tested to confirm the failure and discovered it to be intermittent.  The short story is that I eventually disassembled the PSU looking for failed electrolytic capacitors (taking pictures along the way) but found no component failures so simply cleaned up the MSC, midplane, and PSU connectors, and reseated everything.  It's been running reliably ever since, about 2 months now.  I think there was a connection issue with the control signals somewhere between the MSC and the PSU.

Welcome back. I also started posting here after being off the forum since 2015. I had taken down my Indigo 2, but now that I am retired, I brought it back online at least in my home network.

Welcome back! I haven't been active in the SGI community since Nekochan shut down, but I do like to come by and say hello now and then. Good to see you and everyone else!

Black Cardinal, I remember you from Nekochan, congrats on finding and joining our wee little band of SGI fanboys. Well, okay, there are a couple of fangirl members, but not many. Biggrin

I mean... sometimes I can be a princess... but... Wink

Glad to hear the Onyx is running.

I live in Oregon now too. Was in Los Angeles from 1995-2021.
Love the Oregon weather, forests, and rivers.

My Octane is running well but I haven't fired up the O2.

Last I checked it was in 2019 and the 1600sw wasn't producing an image.
Need to fire it up and figure out if I can at least get a VGA signal from it or if it is something else..
.. meaning I probably need to clean it up and reseat everything again like you did with the Onyx. It has my only working seat of Softimage.
