Octane2 not seeing all memory
Hey all, i have added 8, 1gb dimms to my Octane2 but it only reports 6gb.  Is there any easy to check things to see what may be happening?  I'm running some of the prom mem tests now to see what is reported.

I have also put the dimms in different orders to see if 2 of them are bad, no matter what i do it always comes back as 6gb.

Thanks.

How is it telling you it only sees 6gb, if you run top how much does it see?

RE: Octane2 not seeing all memory
The usual questions, what are the model numbers of the memory. Are they all the same manufacturer or they are different third-party Memory manufactures. What’s the layout of the manufacturer placement?

Since they are installed in pairs I would probably argue that you have two different types (manufacturers) of memory occupying the same bank. Re-order your modules so that there are same manufacturer in pairs. If you don’t have an equal number of modules part numbers to have them in same pairs then last Man standing is probably your issue.

Ultima hombre! 😄

But very good point, I've been running 8GB in my "Cock"tane 2 since forever, same manufacturer and part number, and they work perfectly... 😁

RE: Octane2 not seeing all memory
Running "hinv" at the prom reports 6144mb, running "hinv" in the OS also reports 6144mb.

top shows "Memory: 6144M max"

the modules are -
2x KSG-OCTR12/2048 Kingston 2048MB Memory Kit (2x1024MB)
6x SGI 9470343 SGI original 2GB Memory Kit (2x1024MB)

I have the 2 Kingston dimms in the first 2 slots, then i have the 6 SGI dimms in the remaining slots.

I reordered the dimms by placing all 6 SGI dimms first, then the 2 Kingston dimms last and now it works  Triumph

Not too surprising ... the Kingston memory was what you got when you couldn't find the real thing. It was thought to be flakier than actual SGI-brand memory. Maybe that's just gossip but still ...

btw, if you want to play with video, you'll probably end up removing all but 2 gigs. For some reason much of the video stuff doesn't like more memory than that. Maybe there was a windows app in the woodpile Biggrin
