Seems that you are missing a file that is required for inst to work correctly.

With the ~1 in the filename, my guess is someone burned installation files to a CD on a Windows computer, and Windows uses Joliet extensions for file names beyond 8.3 length. UNIX systems use Rock Ridge extensions for the same purpose. The contents of the /dist directory are probably full of 8.3 file names with ~1 in them.

Alternatively, someone used a Windows computer to copy the original CD (with Rock Ridge extensions), and saw only the 8:3 short file names.

Thanks everyone, That seemed to work. I used My x220 with a External Disk drive to burn the disc.

Hey guys, sorry to resurrect this thread, but I’m curious as to what the best way to burn a tarball file downloaded to a pc to a cd-rom. I have noticed that the burning process truncates the file to a 8 digit file name (explained above) which I don’t know if that is affecting the contents of the compressed file.

I have used Roxio cd creator in the past and have seemly worked, but some tarballs had issues. I normally rename the tarball file to a short file name prior to burning to cd.

the internal contents of a tarball/compressed archive wont be impacted by the 8.3 DOS filename change
