Get console through serial port 1 __WITH__ graphics
Before I dig into actual code: does anyone know if there's a possibility to get console through serial port 1 on an SGI O2 at the same time that gfx is used?

That is:

* nvram variable console  must  be 'g'
* keyboard and mouse      must  be attached

I only manage to get a functional console when both nvram console is set to 'd' and keyboard and mouse are not connected. But then, of course, I have no gfx, and I need gfx Smile

I get the feeling this isn't going to work from the prom.

Instead what I would look at doing is attaching a console to serial port 1 after bootup

In doing so, I realized that one of the pins of the male DB9 connector on the back of my O2 was shorter than the rest. It got somehow pushed in. Never seen something like this.

Hadn't noticed it the first time when I just plugged in the DB9 female connector to have a tight connection with screws and all. Now, I tried to connect it very gently pushing it in very slowly (of course, pressing constantly Enter key on the console keyboard with my third hand) and voilà, it now works like a charm.

Lessons learned:

* keyboard and mouse need not be disconnected to get console working
* neither does the monitor/VGA output
* Console port need to be enabled in /etc/inittab (see other threads on irixnet)

Cheers
