If you just got a hard drive, it's probably not set up for IRIX yet:  dksc(0,1,8) refers to slice 8 on the disk, which won't exist until you create it with 'fx'.

First verify that the disk is detected by running the 'hinv' command instead of 'ls'.  Assuming it is detected, you'll have to create an SGI-style disk label and partition structure (unless it came out of another IRIX system).

You'll need to follow the installation instructions to do that.  Then the 'ls' command in the PROM monitor should show show empty listings instead of "no such device".  After that, you'll be able to install the IRIX operating system.

The best set of partitioning and installation instructions (IMHO) are Ian Mapleson's "Installing IRIX 6.5" guide.  Only after you've run 'fx' will the disk have the (empty) slices that 'ls' is trying to list.

This guide is the most up to date, but I suspect your disk id is wrong. What does hinv from command monitor say?
