Indigo/Indy for general use

RE: Indigo/Indy for general use
Good point on the distancing solution. The keyboard and mouse that came with my Octane have the longest cords I've ever seen in this kind of peripheral.

I have a 10m VGA cable with excellent shielding (crisp image) and I could move the Octane to the other side of my office - but that's where my girlfriend sits =)))))))))))))))

My usual solution is just to wear noise cancelling headphones, but she won't join me on that.

For sound isolation that could work:

Get a small standing cabinet with just enough room dimensionally to accommodate the Octane. Cut the back off of the cabinet, add cable management and such. Pack the sides of the unit with egg crate mattress pad foam pieces. You can also technically glue this to the wall behind the unit and it'll break up the acoustics a fair bit. Cut vents in the front and add some quiet high CFM fans.

Stylish and functional if that matters/helps.

Also if you put expansion cards in slot D it triggers fastfan... If it's really as bad as you claim, I suspect that.

I'm not an artist but years ago I did sketch out an Indy replacement steel chassis that would allow stacking and be much more capable of handling cooling demands. The idea was to essentially treat it like a blade cabinet and have a supplementary 12V PSu for all fans in a blade unit.

Well she could sit on the Octane or an open lap?  I mean, you work with what you have.

HAHAHAHAHA =)))
Well, yes - I oftentimes question the value of my current engagement, but that's another story.

I stumbled across the idea of building my own soundproof cabinet (all pre-built ones are super expensive). I ended up designing my servers to be passively cooled. But I think I will use my next holidays to get done with it.

I still think I will get a second SGI, but let's see how things go during the next months.

Thanks for the tips!

I always thought if I had the money I'd make a wall-based display on metal shelving with plexi or glass sides and face that sealed in the SGIs...but place them on lazy susans that could be control under each shelf, fully plugged in, remote ability to power-on (various mods) with a central switching video display and PS/2 Mouse/keyboard. Then the display would have like a ton of filtration and send air either top to bottom or bottom to top and attempt to keep additional dust out. You keep them off most of the time, but you could schedule power on for PSU maintenance (cap forming) or whatever. Sort of like a museum would but running and with interactive keyboard/mouse and monitor outside the great display! All networked so you'd not need to interact with removable media often. Though you COULD have a low-speed SCSI switcher for a ZIP drive or PCMCIA card reader or something.

Think of that project! A SGI WALL of stations, colors, models, and I'd imagine if you had a the balls to go big iron, they be on the bottom of course (floor-ish). That would finally finish my dream. A great display of SGIs, all working, best condition I can find...pure art meets history...an inspiring sight every day.

You can tell I live alone...

These pictures are from 2013 or so, the year after the construction of my computer room. At that moment everything was just sitting there, and some things have been moved around a bit. Right now everything is wired and I can remotely switch power to everything from a big PDU under the floor.

The only piece of the puzzle I still have to solve is a KVM compatible with all these generations of keyboards, mice and screens.

I don't. I used to have my hobby room upstairs in a bedroom, with spare parts in the attic and big iron in the garage. Not exactly ideal. Then my oldest son was born in 2008, the second in 2011, and I had to evacuate the bedroom. This happens to a lot of guys with this hobby, but I was in the lucky circumstance that I had some funds from selling shares in a company I used to work for. So I was able to have both: the family *and* the hobby.

Yes - if the relationship keeps going strong, the in-laws promised to give us some land, which would allow me to build a place without being abused by a bank. I have friends who are architects and engineers already fighting to do the house for free, so hey - it's basically labour and parts!

In that case, I will for sure get two small server rooms in different buildings in case of fire AND a workshop to build exactly something like that.

Your collection is impressive!
