Looking to upgrade base model O2 to R12K some questions.
So I have a brand new base model o2 and want to upgrade but I see I might run into some issues doing this, i looked for two holes underneath my o2 and i see two diameters that lead into a metal wall. I have the two risers and also 256 memory for the upgrade. What else might I need?  Im willing to saw things as long as its tucked away. I also want the newer skin the o2's came with later on, is that possible or is the profile different and will not fit on the base? Can I just replace the original o2 skin with the newer one? I know this might sound crazy but any reason why we cant attach a solid state drive to it? Thanks!

Hello,

What do you mean by base model? R5k? I did a complete write up (see below link) to upgrade a R5k model to R10k/R12k.... for some reason I can't get the images back up, I'll try and fix this tomorrow. (EDIT - Photos restored!) You should not have to hack away if you already have the chassis version with the removable drive bay plate.

There is also a wiki article here

SSD - Yes you can, but you are going to spend A LOT of money on ACARD SCSI to SATA adapter...if you can even find one. They sell for around $1,000 on ebay now. Your best bet is install a quiet 10k / 15k SCA SCSI drive. The 10K 'newer' 10K versions produce less heat.

The skins are a easy straight swap...However the 'old' style skins are quite hard to come by so I'd hang on to those. In fact, ANY good O2 skins are hard to come by.

You will also need a R10K/R12k PCI riser, R10K/R12k motherboard tray.

I've been playing with converting r5k o2's into r10k o2's with minimal effort - basically you need to remove the PCI rizer and put it off to the side. Your hostid will be a mess, but thats ok, you can actually still set yout lmhostid to whatever it was before and - nothing gets impacted.

The important pieces are the plastic piece that goes around the bigger r10k CPU and hold it in place, and 2x SGI O2 CPU Electrical Risers things to connect the CPU to the board.

I'll have to do this again because it was plretty easy - and no other workarounds were needed - the only problem was you loose the PCI slot - the R10k cpu is taking up the space.
