As of now, IRIX isn't installable in a traditional virtual machine environment like VMware - the MIPS architecture isn't supported. Emulation efforts are underway through the MAME project. Emulation is still slow, although tweaking various settings can help make it faster.

Our primary thread on MAME emulation is here: https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-1012.html.

The best experience for IRIX is still going to be on actual SGI hardware at this time. Depending on where you are in the world, you may be able to acquire a system for a reasonable price - they seem to be coming down a little bit again after rising significantly last year along with the pandemic. An Octane is a great choice if you have the space for it, as would a Fuel or Tezro, although they tend to be very expensive. An O2 or high-spec Indy would take less space and can still provide a good IRIX experience.
