SGI O2 Software Questions

SGI O2 Software Questions
I was just generously given an SGI O2 and I was wondering if I need to put any "must-get" software on it besides IRIX? Also, how would I configure video pass-thru so I could (for example) play my PS1 through it?

RE: SGI O2 Software Questions
For the O2 specifically, I really like Adobe Premiere. The only version released for IRIX was intended for the O2, although it can be made to run on similar-era systems like the Octane with a bit of fiddling. The general and O2-specific demos are also fun to play around with. Blender runs quite well and the the SGI Quake port works on it as well, although the one in Nekoware does not.

I haven't tried a PS1 specifically, but you may need to use some sort of basic progressive scan upscaler in order to get a proper 480p signal from the console to allow the O2 to sync to it and display it properly. A lot of older consoles display at 240p, which is a sort of hack and not a "proper" standard, so a lot of SGI gear has some difficulty with it. I use a Sony DVD recorder with a progressive scan feature and I've been able to get output from my N64 and Sega Saturn that way.

All of the options you need will be in the system's Video Panel. You can set the default input and output sources there. Also, if you don't have one already, I suggest finding one of the O2Cams to play around with. They're surprisingly nice for a webcam made in the mid-90s.

If you have any other questions, just let us know and we'll be happy to help out!
