Yeah, I don't have sockets at all, even good ones. I don't build electronics (never will likely, my burden to bare), I'm only research repair (case-by-case) and have most of the common professional tools to that end.

That's why I did the second one without ever gripping the IC or the legs. I worked exclusively from the epoxy side. Only handled the IC with my bare hands sometimes. I didn't experience any accidental leg movement this time. But yeah, it's caveman-esq and you have to be careful. Life without the perfect, right, tools and a lab sucks... :-(

OK, I've completed all three units I have tops for, glued and everything.  I don't have the indigo2 setups ready to test them...so that's still to be determined.

I wanted to both post pictures but also to show what epoxy I used.  I used "Araldite Rapid 5min epoxy", that I got an Amazon, I've never used this stuff before, but it was recommended on an electronics forum for good reasons and I reviewed the product documentation.  I will say, I'm impressed in the fact that the odor isn't nearly as strong as the JBWeld 5min we use at work, that stuff stinks like burning hair, for 30+ minutes, this stuff had a minor smell that didn't linger very long (like 2 minutes) then nothing I could readily detect and I was working in a poorly ventilated area at my soldering desk.  No problems!

I didn't slather it on either.  I placed a mixed line of adhesive down the center of the IC, then I place three dots of adhesive on the PCB (not around the solder joints), then mated the two.  I felt confident there was no heat or distortion of the PCB during curing.  I'm going to wait until tomorrow (at the earliest) to solder them.  I will need to create a bridge for the IC that lost its battery legs and I have a solder blobs on the stubs (instead of a legs).

Hi Weblacky,

here is Australia we use Araldite all the time.

It is very strong adhesive, beware not to stick your fingers together ;-)

Araldite, Vegemite and Tim Tams !

Cheers from Oz,

John.
