I've mentioned this in the IRIXCE and other posts here but I thought I'd reintroduce it since I fixed some long-standing bugs with it.
It's at
http://gitea.irixce.org
What is Gitea?
Gitea is a self hosted git server, frontend and repository system.
Why should I use it over, say github or gitlab?
Both of these are corporate options, if we're talking about their main services. Gitlab has a self hosted option, but it's more complicated and has a paywall.
This allows more fine grained customization and control, it also doesn't have restrictions on private repositories, allows normal http access etc. (SSL is still getting fixed, but more on that in a bit)
Beyond that, GitHub is owned by Microsoft, heavily paywalled, and while it has great visibility and universality you might not agree with everything that they have done especially under Microsoft. It's probably pretty dumb to use what is the Facebook of developers for everything.
Plus you can't access it from IRIX. While gitea itself is not quite irix compatible css wise, you can still navigate with broken CSS and stuff at least, and the proxy that we offer should work too!
Why not at irixnet?
The reasons are simple. I want to offer some group neutral services. Because I'm the sole admin/dev for IRIXCE right now, this does require some level of trust, some which those here may not be comfortable with. But I want to make a statement, one I've made before: the IRIX community need self sufficiency. Corporate and big FOSS has all but left us behind, so we need to create our own ecosystems. IRIXCE, due to its very nature as a new distribution of IRIX (eventually) will require separate infrastructure, domains, DNS, liability etc. That's to protect and minimize C&D spread.
I have a few people I will be bringing on in the future as IRIXCE admins, and applications will be open eventually.
What technical issues?
At this time, they're all minor. SSL doesn't currently work but should be working within 48 hours. SSH was broken, but that was Cloudflare fuckery. I'm moving it to another DNS service eventually!
Will other VCS be offered?
I have plans to offer fossil and mercurial if there's demand, but I doubt it at the current juncture. If you are interested let me know.
