Octane Monitor?

Octane Monitor?
Just wondering what people are using as a "modern-ish" monitor for an Octane.

My original SGI 21" sony died a while back, and I am about to get the parts I need to get my Octane back up and running, so need a new monitor.

Just after suggestions.

Cheers,
Jason.

RE: Octane Monitor?
I currently use several 4:3 Dell 1708fp LCDs. Normally anything in the Dell 170x line works with SOG, but check their manuals (it’s documented in specs). Also older Samsung syncmasters can do SOG as well.

Don’t know if any modern monitors. But Dell 4:3 17s can be found plentiful on used tech sites and computer recyclers. Many at like <$20 prices because 4:3 ratios aren’t big sellers anymore and businesses just want them gone.

I just picked up three Dell 1709fp monitors for $10 each.

RE: Octane Monitor?
I am currently using a Dell 1907FPc for my SGIs and NeXTs, works great as a VGA SoG screen.

I wouldn't mind getting something that has higher res for the Octane

RE: Octane Monitor?
Not to be difficult, but the reason I don’t get 19 inch monitors is I actually have very good eyesight and most 17 inch monitors have exactly the same resolution as most 19 inch monitors. SGI’s that I’ve dealt with have a native 1280 x 1024 resolution. Both monitors that have been mentioned here have exactly the same native resolution.

It’s the same argument with HD TV sizes. If you are using an HD TV with a native resolution of 1080P my personal opinion is anything over 50 inches starts to look too big. You want more usable real estate with your screen size increase not everything to look uniformly larger. Unless of course you do need stuff to be larger then I would totally recommend going with a 19 inch over 17 inch if you need the help or wear corrective eye wear.

I just wanted provide the OP with another option for monitors that work great for SoG.

To be honest I though it was a 17 before I went and looked at the part number. I actually like the size of the screen because the retro machines are in a corner of my home office and it allows me to keep tabs on the screen from my desk in the other corner.
But the most important factor for me using it is that it was free and works fantastic with SoG :-P

In general I do feel the recent trend for large "full hd" monitors is a bit silly. Which is why I used Dell 24" 1920x1200 monitors primarily on PC for years and years, although my primary is now a 34" UW 1440p monitor.

RE: Octane Monitor?
photo570 - I misread your question, I thought you were getting parts to fix the monitor (misread the parts part). What happened with it? SGI LCDs are not common, did something happen with the backlight or just no longer turns on? I'm curious because I'd not want to see it trashed if your open to describing the problem and maybe offering it for parts/repair on the marketplace?

If it's just a blinking power light, or no power, I'm a player! If you had actual screen issues...I'm not a player.

The monitor I had for the Octane was the big ass "sony trinitron CRT". Just went pop ;last time I plugged it in. Not worth fixing when I can replace it with a LCD like one of the Dells suggested here for a few bucks.

I have a couple of 1600sw's for my O2 which I picked up years ago for basically nothing. Fingers crossed they still go. Joy
